My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic – “Luna Eclipsed” Recap

by on October 23, 2011

Luna returns to Ponyville on Nightmare Night to clear her bad pony image, and to earn the respect and admiration she rightfully deserves
as a Princess.

it’s finally here, Nightmare Night. That one night of the year when ponies dress up and the young ones go door to door get candy. A night to celebrate
fear and fright. A night created long ago due to the actions of
Nightmare Moon. A night- By now you get the point, this is a Holiday
themed episode. I hope you don’t need me to tell you which day it’s
themed after. This episode is also the highly anticipated return of
Princess Luna.

episode starts with introducing the audience to Nightmare Night.
Setting the mood while making it clear what the similarities are
between Nightmare Night and Halloween. It also sets everything up
without overstaying its welcome. Princess Luna, who has a bad reputation due to her previous actions, sets
out to clear her bad name. Of all nights she decides to do this on a a scary holiday inspired by her, and she makes a dramatic appearance. Of course the ponies are terrified to see Luna, so Twilight Sparkle takes on the task of trying to help her get along with them.

is no better way to describe the episode than as follows: The best
episode of season two yet! Season one set a high standard. A
standard that can only be reached through passion, determination, and imagination; this episode
reaches that standard. All characters are deep and perfectly
portrayed. There’s character growth, genuine emotion, high attention
to both the big picture as well as the little details, and a great
sense of humor including well
done running gags. And as always it’s incredible how much they were
able to fit into one episode without anything feeling rushed or
shoved in.

The only complaint I can possibly fathom is the fact that
my 2nd  favorite character, Rarity, doesn’t appear in the episode. It
would’ve been interesting to see her reaction to Luna’s return.
Still, that is a rather minor issue considering how many characters
they were able to fit into the episode, a list that includes Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Spike, Zecora, Luna, and a new character by the name of
Pipsqueak. Pipsqueak is a young colt who is experiencing Nightmare
Night for the first time. Despite the unoriginal name, I found him to
be an interesting character who I wouldn’t mind seeing more of. Luna
herself is also practically a new character, since she hasn’t made an
appearance before as her restored self. They did a great job with
her. She’s justifiably behind the times, and the way she talks
reflects that as it should.

Eclipsed” had a satisfying ending emotionally, and I was still
chuckling for awhile afterwards from the humor. I don’t particularly
care for Holiday-themed episodes or Halloween, but this episode was
amazing. At the very least I’ll be watching this episode again on the 31stand once again every year. Anyone with so much as a passing interest
in “Friendship is Magic” should not miss this episode.
