Movie Studios Keeping Close Eye on "Cars" on iTunes; Retailers Offer DVD Incentives

by on November 9, 2006

A report in Variety states that movie studios are keeping a close watch on sales of Disney/Pixar’s Cars on DVD and as a digital download from the Apple iTunes Store. Cars can be purchased at the iTunes Store for $12.99, significantly lower than most retailers will be charging for the DVD. The price discrepancy is often cited as a reason why movie studios are reluctant to sign deals with Apple for selling downloadable movies.

Several retailers are offering special bonuses for buying the DVD of Cars; the incentives available from several different retailers are summarized at the Luxo weblog. Target and Wal-Mart are offering bonus discs of extra material, with Wal-Mart’s disc focusing on the music of Cars (and especially the Rascal Flatts cover of “Life is a Highway”) and Target’s disc reproducing several of the video podcasts posted on the Cars movie website before the movie was released (based on screen grabs available at DVD Talk).
