“Monsters University” Valedictorian at the Box Office with $82M Take

by on June 24, 2013

Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University handily took the top spot in US domestic box office ticket sales, with an estimated $82 million take, representing the studio’s second-best opening ever (behind Toy Story 3‘s $110 million opening weekend) and just behind Monsters Inc.‘s opening weekend of $87 million (which represents the 2001 $62.57 million opening adjusted for inflation). The opening also represents Pixar’s 14th straight number-one debut at the box office.

In a separate story, the Los Angeles Times has noted that Pixar’s box office track record is also unusual in that its best-reviewed films also tend to be its best performers, but Monsters University‘s relatively disappointing reviews are a break from that trend.
