Manga/Anime Property Airs on AZN Television as Live-action Movie

by on September 21, 2007

AZN Television will begin the fall season with a line-up of action-packed thrillers, including Initial D.

Premiering Sept. 20 at 7pm & 12am ET, this award-winning 2005 box office hit delves into the world of street car racing, known as drifting. In the early hours of the night, 18 year-old Takumi delivers tofu orders for his ex-racecar driver father while perfecting the dangerous art of drifting. Screeching his day around the dark slopes and curves of the hills surrounding his home, a new generation of drifters is unleashed where speed alone is not enough.

Originally produced in Cantonese in 2005, Initial D won awards at that year’s Asia-Pacific Film Festival and Golden Horse Film Festival, as well as at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards. Jay Chou was recognized as best new performer at both the Golden Horse Film Festival as well as Hong Kong; Anthony Wong Chau-Sang was recognized as best supporting actor in the Asia-Pacific and Golden Horse fests, and in Hong Kong. Hong Kong also recognized Kinson Tsang for best sound design, and Eddy Wong, Victor Wong and Bryan Cheung for best visual effects.

Initial D, a transliteration of “Kashiramoji Dī”, is a manga by Shuichi Shigeno which has been serialized in Kodansha’s Young Magazine since 1995. It was been adapted into a long-running anime series by Pastel, Studio Gallop and OP Planning , which premiered in Japan on Fuji TV and animax, before being made into this live-action film by by Avex and Media Asia. Both the manga and anime series were licensed for distribution in North America by Tokyopop. The anime and manga focus on the world of illegal Japanese street racing, where all the action is concentrated in the mountain passes and never in cities or urban areas, and the drift racing style is emphasized in particular.
