This morning during the Playstation Experience event in Anaheim, developer Naughty Dog finally unveiled the sequel to their finest hour: The Last of Us for Playstation 3 (remastered on PS4). Formally titled The Last Of Us Part 2, it’s now in early development for Playstation 4. And guess who’s back?
If you don’t know why this is such a pleasant surprise…..in the months following the release of The Last Of Us, Naughty Dog was repeatedly asked by the press if there would be a sequel and if the characters from the first game would return. They didn’t rule out another game, but they expressed doubt it would be about Joel and Ellie. We were told several times any possible sequel would probably be about different people, UNLESS they could come up with the perfect way to continue the story of our original protagonists, which would be harder.
Looks like they pulled it off. The trailer shows an older Ellie who’s mastered the guitar and is “going to find and kill every last one of them.” We don’t know who “they” are (maybe that Fireflies graffiti outside is a clue) but she’s apparently already finished off one, whose body is lying there on the floor of her bedroom. Ellie has a bleeding scar, which must mean this guy just broke in (and regretted it).
“I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure,” says Neil Druckmann, creative director. “Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.”
The Last Of Us Part 2 is now in production for Playstation 4. It’ll be a while before we see more of it, and longer still before we get to play it……but Joel and Ellie ARE coming back!
UPDATE: Druckmann has now confirmed that Ellie will be the main playable character in the game and its story will focus on her, as opposed to the focus on Joel from the previous game.
