Did you know “Your Name” is now the highest-grossing anime movie of all time? Can you guess what other record it’s about to break?
How about “shortest time to inspire an inferior Western remake”? The success of this picture did not go unnoticed by Hollywood, and now JJ Abrams of “Bad Robot” fame is attached to a potential live-action version. Screen Daily reports that Paramount Pictures is investing, and Abrams and Lindsey Weber are producing. Eric Heisserer, who wrote Arrival, is crafting the screenplay, and Genki Kawamura, who produced the original film, is also on staff.
“The meetings so far have been creatively stimulating with fantastic ideas that no doubt will make for a great movie”, Kawamura said. “I am greatly honoured to work with these incredible creators in bringing to audiences the Hollywood live action version of Your Name.”
“Your Name” is about a Japanese country priestess and a Tokyo student who swap bodies. Also, they happen to be different genders. Mind-swapping movies have certainly been done before (Hollywood seemed to love them in the late 80’s), but many critics consider “Your Name” to be one of the best tales of the genre, if not the best.
Though a lot of the elements specific to Japanese culture could be lost, the general concept of “Country vs. city” would translate for a US audience. If Abrams is good at anything, it’s taking properties created by other people and creating exact copies of them. It didn’t work so well for space epics, but it may be the best shot “Your Name” can hope for.
