Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania set a box office record for a film released in September, scaring up $42.5 million in ticket sales in its premiere weekend, handily beating the last recordholder (2002’s Sweet Home Alabama, which took in $35.6 million). The box office take also represents the best opening for a Sony Pictures Animation feature and the highest box office take for a film with Adam Sandler in a starring role since The Longest Yard in 2005. Hotel Transylvania’s ticket sales were more than double those of the #2 film, which was Sony Pictures’ Looper taking in $20.5 million.
