Variety reports that Heavy Metal and Weta Workshop’s Pukeko Pictures are adapting the Image Comics series Rat Queens into an animated TV series. The comic (by Kurtis Weibe and Roc Upchurch) describes itself as a “sass-and-sorcery” story, centering on a quartet of foul-mouthed beer-swilling adventurers: Hannah the Rockabilly elven mage, Violet the hipster dwarven fighter, Dee the atheist human cleric and Betty the hippy smidgen thief. The article states that Heavy Metal and Pukeko plan on developing the comics into a 30-minute show before shopping it to networks. Given the comics’ attitude, those networks will almost certainly not include candidates like Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network, aiming instead for the likes of Adult Swim, FX, or Comedy Central.
