Guardian on "The 99" and Its Creator Naif Al-Mutawa

The Guardian has posted a lengthy profile of Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa and his Islam-inspired superhero team The 99, who will be teaming up with DC Comics’ Justice League in a comic book mini-series launching tomorrow, October 27, and are slated to star in their own animated series that will air in the United States on the new Hub network. Among other topics, the article delves into the origins of the project, Al-Mutawa’s goals for it in both the Middle East and the western world, how the JLA/The 99 crossover came about, and the backlash beginning against the project from American right-wing/conservative circles and the ongoing difficulties Al-Mutawa faces with censorship in Middle Eastern countries.

The 99 is slated to debut on the Hub in January 2011. An animation preview for the show was posted in December 2009:
