by on February 13, 2013

GhostIntheShellArise2During an hour-long presentation in Tokyo on Tuesday, the first footage and details were revealed for Production I.G.’s new anime project for the cyberpunk classic Ghost in the Shell. The event, which was simulcasted globally online through Youtube and translated by English interpreters, included Production I.G. co-founder Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, director Kazuchika Kise and scriptwriter Tow Ubukata (Mardock Scramble). The new project, titled Ghost in the Shell: Arise, takes place in 2027 AD as a prequel story about the early days of Major Makoto Kusanagi and Section 9. Commenting on the mindset he had developing the story, Ubukata expressed that “…This has to be a story of Makoto Kusanagi as a human being…how Makoto Kusanagi became the Makoto Kusanagi that we all know of.” It was also divulged that the story is being developed from a plot concept provided by Ghost in the Shell creator Shirow Masamune.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise will consist of four fifty-minute installments, with each part screening in Japanese theaters for a short time prior to a home video release. The first episode, “Ghost Pain”, will have its theatrical premiere on June 22nd with a home video release to follow on July 26th.
