The game is a fantasy RPG about a boy given the chance to recover his deceased mother by entering a mystical world. According to the article, Ghibli decided to work on the film after being approached by musician Naoya Fujimaki. The studio was also facing a shortage of work to keep its staff occupied after the recent completion of Ponyo.
