The Japanese animation studio Gainax has announced that it is restarting work on its Blue Uru film project. Blue Uru is intended to be a sequel to Gainax’s first theatrical film, the 1987 sci-fi drama Royal Space Force – The Wings of Honnêamise. Work on the film first began in 1992, but it was suspended the following year due to financial difficulties. The project was revisited again in later years, but ultimately abandoned. This time, Gainax has confirmed two key staff for the film: Hiroyuki Yamaga as the writer and director and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto as the character designer. Yamaga wrote and directed Royal Space Force as well, while Sadamoto handled the character designs and worked as an animation director as well as a layout and production designer. The announcement for the film came on the first day of the Tokyo International Anime Fair.

Blue Uru was first conceived as taking place fifty years after Royal Space Force – The Wings of Honnêamise, telling the story of a group of fighter pilots. A release window for the movie has not been announced at this time.
