Future Spotlight: “Avatar: Legend of Korra” Part II

by on January 5, 2012

Welcome to Part II of this Future Spotlight! You can read Part 1 here.

Before we begin, I’d like to note that there may have been a change in the show’s title. In a new Nickelodeon promo for 2012, the show was described as Avatar: The Legend of Korra instead of The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra. I’m glad for the title change since the previous one didn’t really make sense, given that Korra doesn’t revolve around an Airbender like the original series did.

Today we’ll focus on the setting of this new series, Republic City.

Republic City

After the war, Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko got the Fire Nation colonies and made a society where people of all elements and nations could live together. This nation was called the United Republic. Republic City is the capital of the country.

Republic City is one of the things that make Korra distinct from Avatar. In that show episodes took place in different settings all over the Avatar world, but in Korra it seems that the action will mostly take place in Republic City.

As you may have noticed in the trailer, there has been in immense progression in technology. Skyscrapers have been built, and it’s been said that there will be cars and motorcycles shown in this series. Republic City is also home to famous arena battles where two teams of three types of benders go against one another, using what’s known as Mixed Martial Arts. Metalbender cops, led by Toph’s daughter, patrol the streets.

However, things are not really peaceful, as there is an anti-bender revolution stirring things up in Republic City. The leader of it all is a masked man who goes by the name Amon.

His henchmen are all Chi-Blockers. They call themselves the Equalists, and it seems that they will be the main antagonists of Korra. Not much is known about them yet.

Voice Talent

Janet Varney as Korra

JK Simmons as Tenzin

Seychelle Gabriel as un-heard of character, Asami

Dante Basco as unknown character

Rob Paulsen as unknown character

Eve Marie-Saint as unknown character

Dee Bradley Baker as unknown character (he will most likely voice the animals)

As you can see, we have a lot of people voicing unknown characters. Hopefully we’ll have more information regarding the characters they voice for Part III. Despite the lack of information about this so far, I believe Korra is very lucky to have such experienced voice actors and actresses.

That wraps up Part II. Thanks to the Avatar: The Last Airbender Online Website for all the information. Keep your eyes peeled for part III once we’ve learned more!
