FRIES
Roland. Please. Nora...

The guard grabs him, and hauls him from his chair.

Roland Dagget scowls.

DAGGET
Your quest has failed, Victor. I can't allow you to take more funds and energy...

FRIES
I'm so close, Roland. Just a few more weeks. Please!

Dagget sighs.

DAGGET
You were close three years ago. Millions of dollars later, you're still "close".

He sighs.

DAGGET
She's not coming back, Victor.

FRIES
Please. I'm begging you, Roland. Just a little while longer.

Dagget scowls and gestures at Fries.

In a fit of rage, he heaves the table over, standing.

ANGLE ON:

Fries.

He scowls.

FRIES
It can be done...

Fries.

He smiled beneath his helmet.

He marches right through the doors. They shatter into thousands of pieces, causing a tremendous amount of noise.

He enters the building.

He scowls and raises his hands in surrender.

The guard comes down the hall, his gun trained on Fries.

SECURITY GUARD
Don't move!

ANGLE ON:

Fries. He extends his hands, so his palms are toward the guard.

SECURITY GUARD
Ahh!

The gun clatters to the floor.

SECURITY GUARD
W-What the hell?

Fries smiles. When he speaks, his voice is muffled, almost inhuman.

FRIES
Hell is considerably hotter.

He lowers his gauntlet at the guard, who is shaking with cold, his entire midsection encased in ice.

SECURITY GUARD
Wait! P-Please! Victor! Mr. Fries!

ANGLE ON:

Fries's face.

Emotionless.

PULL BACK

He clenches his fist, and chemical cloud envelops the guard.

Fries releases the trigger, and stands there, scowling.

PAN AROUND

Some of the chemical residue hangs in the air.

A CRIME SCENE-DAY

ANGLE ON:

Commissioner Gordon

He stares at the dead guard, scowling.

GORDON
What does CSU have?

A CSU detective approaches.

CSU OFFICER
Not enough, sir. You can see the cause of death.

Gordon nods.

CSU OFFICER
Besides this poor fellow, someone shut down fifteen stasis pods. People in cryogenic sleep. Well...they were.

GORDON
What?

CSU OFFICER
There are fifteen corpses down the hall, sir.

Harvey Bullock enters the room, looking around. He's licking frosting off his fingers.

BULLOCK
Whadda we got?

GORDON
One flash-frozen corpse here, and fifteen dead down the hall.

BULLOCK
Jeez.

The CSU Officer shakes his head and moves off down the hall.

Gordon looks at the corpse. He sighs.

BULLOCK
Commish?

GORDON
It's just so...

BATMAN
Cold.

Gordon looks up.

Batman steps from an office on the side of the hall.

ANGLE ON:

Bullock.

He stares.

ANGLE ON:

Batman.

He walks up to the frozen corpse and kneels.

ANGLE ON:

The corpse's throat.

Blue, almost like frostbite.

Batman reaches up and touches the skin with a gloved hand. It cracks.

GORDON
There are fifteen more dead in the stasis pods down the hall.

ANGLE ON:

Batman's face.

Thinking.

PULL BACK

Unseen, he reaches out and breaks off an "icicle". He opens a storage pouch on the front of his belt and slips it in, then closes it. He kneels there for a moment, looking at the dead man.

Batman stands, looking at Gordon. Then he turns and walks off into the shadows from where he came.

ANGLE ON:

BULLOCK
Now what?

Gordon turns to him.

GORDON
Get a refrigerator truck out here. Alert this man's family.

BULLOCK
I meant about him.

Bullock jerks a finger toward the room Batman came from.

GORDON
Who?

BULLOCK
The Batman?

GORDON
Who?

Bullock looks at Gordon.

BULLOCK
Oh.

Gordon fixes him with a look, then turns and heads down the hall.

CUT TO:

CRYOGENIC STORAGE

Gordon enters. Roland Dagget is standing there, looking forlorn.

GORDON
Mr. Dagget?

Dagget turns.

GORDON
James Gordon, Commissioner of Police

DAGGET
Commissioner? I'm that important?

Gordon smiles.

GORDON
Hill sent me.

DAGGET
Ah. How is Hamilton?

GORDON
Fine, sir. I need to ask you some questions.

DAGGET
Excuse me?

GORDON
Standard stuff. Just to make sure this isn't something like insurance fraud.

DAGGET
Insur-Now look here, Gordon-

GORDON
It's procedure, nothing more.

DAGGET
I stand to lose millions in lawsuits.

GORDON
I understand that sir, but-

DAGGET
Now isn't the time, James.

Gordon looks at him.

DAGGET
Call the office. We'll talk.

Gordon nods. He sticks out his hand.

GORDON
It was nice to meet you, sir.

Dagget shakes, halfheartedly.

Gordon turns and leaves the room. Bullock is waiting in the hall.

BULLOCK
What a jerk.

GORDON
He may be, but Roland Dagget is one of Hill's biggest contributors.

Bullock nods.

BULLOCK
He's still a jerk.

Gordon smiles, and the two of them step over broken glass and head out into the parking lot.

CUT TO:

THE CAVE

Batman sits at the computer, data scrolling across the screen. He stares at it, lost in thought.

SFX: Footsteps.

Alfred stands there.

ALFRED
Hacking, sir?

BATMAN
The Dagget Industries database.

ANGLE ON:

Alfred.

He scowls.

ALFRED
I would assume that those files would be well-protected.

Batman nods.

BATMAN
They were.

He taps a few buttons.

BATMAN
I'm checking employee records for anyone that might have a motive. A vendetta against Dagget, perhaps.

He scrolls down the screen.

ANGLE ON:

The screen blinks and text appears as he accesses files.

BATMAN
Here.

Alfred looks up.

Batman looks at the screen.

BATMAN
Victor Fries. Top-ranking specialist in Dagget's cryogenics branch.

He keeps reading.

BATMAN
Fries developed a "flash-freezing" method for Dagget Labs. A chemical compound that would be injected into the bloodstream, and freeze. It would have been a more inexpensive method of cryogenic freezing, had it worked.

He scrolls down the screen.

BATMAN
Dagget tested the compound, but refused Fries production. The formula's on file for some reason.

He reads.

BATMAN
Fries's wife, Nora, went into a coma five years ago. Dagget paid to keep her on life support while Fries searched for a cure. Last weekend, she was taken off life support because he couldn't pay anymore.

He looks at Alfred.

BATMAN
Fries himself was fired three days later for failing to report to work on time.

He taps a few buttons.

BATMAN
And his home address is still in the company database.

He stands.

BATMAN
Don't wait up.

He strides toward the Batmobile.

He scowls, and continues...

Fries's bed is made.

Batman leaves the bedroom.

Batman heads down the hall and stops. He turns and opens a closet door.

He wants revenge for his wife's death. I'm heading to Dagget's home now.

CUT TO:

A WIDE SHOT OF DAGGET'S MANSION

ANGLE ON:

A cloud freezing chemicals envelops the handle. When it clears, a gloved hand reaches out:

And breaks the doorknob off.

The door is pushed open.

CUT TO:

A hall.

ANGLE ON:

A door at the end of the hall. A gloved hand pushes it open and a shadow falls across a sleeping Roland Dagget.

FREEZE (In the darkness)
Wake up, Roland.

Dagget wakes with a start and looks up.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze. Towering over Dagget.

DAGGET
What? Victor? What is this?

Freeze scowls.

FREEZE
The end.

Freeze lowers his gauntlet.

DAGGET
Victor! Please!

FREEZE
Once I begged you. For Nora's life. You refused. Now, I'm returning the favor.

CUT TO:

EXT. DAGGET'S MANSION

The Batmobile squeals to a stop. Batman vaults out, racing into the mansion.

He runs up the stairs and down the hall.

He bursts into Dagget's room and sees:

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

Standing in front of Dagget's bed.

ANGLE ON:

Roland Dagget.

Snow and ice coat his skin.

He's dead.

Batman looks at the block of ice that had been a man. He looks at Freeze.

Freeze turns.

FREEZE
Dagget is dead. His soul will poison no more.

BATMAN
It ends here.

Freeze scowls and points his gauntlet at Batman. He fires.

Batman ducks out of the way as the chemical stream hits the wall and crystallizes.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze. He heads for the door, firing a chemical stream across the room at Batman.

CUT TO:

THE HALL

Freeze hurries from the room and into the hallway (with it's marble floor.)

He lowers his gauntlet and fires a long stream as he runs.

The floor hardens, shining with an ice coating.

CUT TO:

THE HALL

Batman exits Dagget's bedroom and looks after Freeze. He looks down, sees the frozen floor.

ANGLE ON:

His face.

He scowls.

Then he sprints after Freeze, with perfect balance. He doesn't slip at all.

CUT TO:

Freeze disappears through a door.

ANGLE ON:

Batman. He runs down the hall.

Batman arrives at the door and looks down.

ANGLE ON:

Stairs lead down into the darkness of Dagget's cellar.

Batman walks down the stairs, alert.

CUT TO:

The bottom. Almost pitch black.

SFX: The soft squeak of the stairs.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

He tenses, waiting.

Batman comes down the stairs. Freeze lunges at him.

Batman grabs Fries's left arm at the wrist and elbow and pulls him into a wall.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

He staggers back from the wall, his helmet slamming into it. Disoriented, he slips and falls, landing on his stomach. He raises his gauntlet and fires.

Batman dodges a chemical stream as Freeze gets to his feet.

He starts to fire again, but Batman crosses the distance in a flash. He grabs Freeze's wrists, pinning him to the wall. Freeze grunts and knees Batman in the stomach. Batman staggers backward and regains his balance.

Freeze fires another stream at him. Batman leaps behind a partition, which becomes coated with a slick sheen of frost.

Freeze follows him around the partition and fires.

FREEZE
Leave me alone!

CLOSE ON:

Batman. Crouched behind the partition.

He scowls.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

He lowers his gauntlet.

He fires a chemical stream at Batman, who dives to the right, rolls to his feet, and...

whips a batarang toward Freeze.

The batarang cracks off Freeze's helmet and falls to the floor. Freeze levels his gauntlet.

He fires.

Batman leaps toward the ceiling, grabs a light fixture and swings over the chemical stream.

He drops to the floor in front of Freeze and whirls into a roundhouse kick.

The kick catches Freeze in the midsection and he staggers and falls.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

He pulls one of the silver canisters from his belt and hurls it toward Batman.

Batman dodges the object.

The object bounces off the wall behind him.

SFX: The object clinks on the floor.

Batman freezes.

Then he sprints, leaping over the a pool table, already sending a smoke bomb in Freeze's direction.

The smoke bomb lands on the floor in front of Freeze.

Fries's grenade EXPLODES, and a freezing chemical cloud spurts into the immediate area.

ANGLE ON:

Batman's smoke bomb.

It pops open, and smoke hisses upward, obscuring Freeze's vision.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze's helmet.

Fries moves out of the smoke.

He looks around. Batman has disappeared.

Freeze scowls, his gauntlet up, looking around.

ANGLE ON:

Behind Freeze.

Batman drops from the ceiling, snapping his cape down. Freeze whirls.

Batman chops a fist along Freeze's helmet...

Freeze grunts and staggers, raising his gauntlet.

Batman slaps it away with a balled left fist and kicks Freeze in the stomach. Freeze staggers into a wall.

Batman whirls, kicking Freeze again.

Frees drops to his knees.

Batman towers over him.

BATMAN
You have a choice, Victor. Make the right one.

Fries looks up at Batman. Then he struggles to his feet. He scowls through his helmet.

BEAT

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

He looks sad. Depressed.
FREEZE
I...I just want Nora back.

ANGLE ON:

Batman.

BATMAN
Your wife is dead, Victor.

He looks right at Freeze.

BATMAN
Murdering innocents won't bring her back.

Freeze looks at Batman, a tear rolling down his cheek.

FREEZE
You don't understand. I'll never see her again. She's gone.

ANGLE ON:

Batman.

His exterior melts away. He looks sad. His eyes betray him.

Freeze catches the look.

BEAT

FREEZE
Does it ever go away? The pain?

Batman looks down. When he looks back up, he is scowling.

BATMAN
No.

Freeze looks down, dejected.

FREEZE
I want them to suffer...like I have, and will.

Batman looks at him. Then his hand goes beneath his cape, and brings out...

ANGLE ON:

The framed photo of Nora Fries.

BATMAN
What would she want?

Freeze looks at him. Then at the picture.

ANGLE ON:

Nora Fries.

Smiling out at us.

ANGLE ON:

Freeze.

He smiles for a minute. Then it's gone. He looks up at Batman.

FREEZE
Enough. You're trying to confuse me. My mind is made up.

ANGLE ON:

Batman.

He tenses.

FREEZE
If I can't have my wife...

FREEZE
I will have vengeance.

Batman reaches beneath his cape, but Freeze raises a gauntlet.

FREEZE
You are not the enemy. I don't want to kill you.

FREEZE
But I cannot have you interfering.

Freeze's gauntlet fires a stream and Batman looks down. His boots are frozen to the floor. Smaller icicles coat his legs and his chest.

FREEZE
Your suit will protect you long enough to get medical care.

He looks at Batman.

FREEZE
Should we meet again, may it be as friends.

Batman watches as Freeze turns and walks away.

BATMAN
Victor!

Freeze doesn't answer. Batman looks down at his frozen torso.

Then he reaches beneath his cape with his other arm, and brings out a small black device.

ANGLE ON:

The device. It clicks open and a white hot flame ignites.

ANGLE ON:

Batman.

He lowers the mini-torch to his iced arm.
