PART 1A
Kate fiddled with the strap of her backpack as she tapped her foot unconsciously from the back of the limo. Her raven black hair pulled back in a small pony tail, her delicate and extremely fine features hidden by long cloths and a black head bandanna. The deep black skirt contrasted her fair skin. The long sleeve top was a medium gray that purposefully had long sleeves that reached past her fingers.
"Alfie?" Her soft voice, almost as delicate as her tiny figure, rang to the driver of the limo.
The English butler with very little hair left and what was of it, was white and gray, looked into the rearview mirror. He hoped the question wasn't about the Gothic Knights, again. "Yes dear?"
"Do you believe in someone giving their life for love?" Alfred almost choked, could she possibly know about-No. She's to young to understand that. She was only thirteen, too young to understand and too naive to understand.
"In some cases maybe. Why do you ask child?" At least it wasn't about her favorite of the Gotham Knights…Nightwing. Alfred shuttered at his name.
"Well, I was thinking about Nightwing and Batgirl." Alfred let out an exasperated sigh. She always had to bring them up. Alfred sped up then hit the brakes as they got to Kate's destination.
"Awe Alfie, do I got ta go to school?" She asked pleadingly.
"Your Mother would kill me if I let you play hooky. Please don't make this hard."
"But Alfie!" She pleaded, "You know the way they treat me!" She wasn't going to give up easily. "They call me names and they spread rumors about me! I- I just can't take it anymore!" For all it was worth Alfred felt sorry for his granddaughter. Barbara forced her to be "normal" though she begged to be tutored. It wasn't like they were short on money.
"Miss Gordon you remember Master Timothy will be taking you to his house for the night today?"
Kate's previous demeanor returned, "I remember Alfie. See you later, have a nice day."
Kate opened the door and stepped out of the limo. For a moment all eyes were on her. Her fair skin always did attract that, but Kate was sure it wasn't her that was attracting the attention. She waved to Alfred, then walked into the school. Kate looked at her watch, there was just enough time to stop at her locker and get books for her first hour. No one talked to Kate, no one dared. She walked into the room just as the bell rang.
"Good morning class!" The way too spunky teacher called out.
"Good morning Miss Trank!" Brittany, the captain cheerleader, brown nosed.
Kate tried not to gag.
"Well class, just so you know, Mister Balding broke his leg last night. You're going to have a substitute for the last two weeks of school." Kate frowned, he was going to be so popular…
"Miss Gordon, why don't you start class by telling us the Pythagorean Theorem."
Kate looked up form her books to the teacher, skimming her eyes over the class.
"A squared plus B squared equals C squared."
"Correct." Class droned on, along with second hour, and third hour. For once Kate was looking forward to fourth hour, and how the substitute would introduce himself. When everyone was changed into gym cloths they all lined up shoulder to shoulder waiting for the teacher to come out.
"Wonder how fat He's gonna be." JC, co-captain of the basketball team, wondered. JC wasn't your normal jock. He was fairly smart, but he wanted to fit in with all the jocks, so he did the macho jock thing.
He'd do anything for Justin, her least favorite jock. Justin Cleary, a major player in the game of dating.
"Wonder how bald he is too." Justin called out while wrapping his arm around his latest catch, Brittany, who happened to be the head cheerleader…They fit each other perfectly.
Kate gulped back the ball in her throat, this wasn’t her main idea of what gym class should be like. Hopefully time would fall fast into the next hour, not much homework could be given here, but that only meant less time in front of the computer.
"He's probably balder than Mister Balding-"
"I'm balding? Nooooooo!" A very tall, muscular man with jet black hair and deep blue eyes came in pulling at his hair. All females in the room froze. The man was any girl's dream come true. He looked no older than twenty, and the wire framed glasses only added a year or so to that.
"I can't be balding yet!" He rambled. "I'm only twenty-six!" he pulled his hair all the harder. "Ow!"
Every guy was cracking up and every girl had a dazed grin or a shy giggle. Kate stood smiling and shaking her head back and forth, she knew he'd do something unforgettable.
"Well," The teacher stood up strait and shrugged, "there goes my coolness factor. Right out the window." He shrugged and let his eyes wander around the class, a lively bunch, what fun. "Hi all, I'm Tim Drake. Like I stated I'm twenty-six and I'll be filling in for Mr. Balding"
"Are you married?" Brittany asked, the twinges of fear and curiosity coming from her voice.
"Not yet" Mr. Drake replied with a smile. All the girls let out a loud squeal and Kate laughed at their girlishness.
"Hey Mister Dee!" Justin's voice, of course. "Can't find a girl? I got a cousin bout your age. Wanna hook up?"
"No thanks." He shrugged, "I’m not the type for blind dates, or regular dates, or…let’s just say I’m not partial to dating at the moment. Plus I don't have the time…or money…"
The talking went in for the entire class. Mister Drake felt entitled to introduce himself.
At the end of the day Kate felt as if all her teachers were against her. Tests in three subjects, reports in two, plus notes on two chapters and a worksheet packet in her English class. Kate slammed her locker door in frustration. Things couldn't possibly get any worse...
"Hey Meow!" Justin's annoying voice rang through the air. Everyone stopped and stared, waiting for what would happen. Kate didn't listen. She continued to walk, just as she always had it was nothing new getting annoyed by the jock bunch, major relation to the Bradey Bunch.
"I was talkin’ to you, Meow!"
Justin stepped in front of Kate and his gooneys circled around her, preventing any escape. Kate evaluated her situation. She didn't want to start a fight, but if it was in defense her Mother would understand. Hopefully.
Six guys around her. Hard, but accomplishable. Then there was the cheerleading squad. Ten, easy to take out... that was if she could still walk.
Kate looked up to Justin and showed only one emotion, uninterested.
"What do you want Cleary?" Kate snapped irritably. She despised trash like him. He was your average class A jerk.
"Who gave you that ride the limo? I thought your mom was poor?"
"My Mother is not poor." Kate said through clenched teeth.
"She's poor compared to my Mom. Plus she lives with her brother, that's poor." He replied snidely, grinning ear to ear.
Kate protectively clenched a notebook in her hands. It was her one, true prize. It had taken her eight months to gather all of the information inside. Jeff, another jock and crony to Justin, homed in on it.
"Hey what's this? Something important I hope." Jeff ripped the notebook from her hands and threw it to Justin.
"That's mine you blockhead! You have no right to take it!" Kate grabbed at the notebook, but Justin was much taller than her and she wound up playing a game of monkey in the middle. Soon Kate gave up. It was useless to try.
"Ha! So what's this?" He skimmed quickly through the pages, his eyes lighting up with ideas. Kate closed her eyes to hold back the tears she knew would come. Moments passed and she regained her control. Opening her eyes she calmly looked at Justin.
"Hey boys! Get a load of this! It's Batman and Robin! Ha! The Gotham Knights?! How immature do ya get?" He began showing all the articles to his gooneys. "Look at all this crap!"
Kate had long sense lost her cool, but now was time to show it. She place a well aimed kick in between Justin's legs, he squealed in pain and dropped the book. The notebook began to fall, but before it could reach a foots length Kate caught it.
"That is my property. Thank you for giving it back." Kate turned to walk away, pushing JC and another jock out of the way.
"Oh please," Justin laughed, "you pathetic little creature. Only a mistake of a whore believes in things that don't exist. At least I have a Father-"
It was as if slow motion, Kate's hand came out from under the shirts long sleeve, flew up and made contact with Justin's cheek. Her long anime like fingers and nails raked on Justin's skin. One nail broke skin and a steady trickle of blood began to slip down his face.
Kate retracted her claw and again turned to leave. Justin let out a small whimper and checked his wound. Then he scowled darkly. There was no way he was taking that from a weirdo like her... Justin lifted a hand off his bleeding cheek and snapped his fingers. The first jock she had pushed away grabbed her wrist.
"Justin ain’t finished with you yet Meow." He hissed menacingly. Kate turned plainly to him.
"Yes. He is." She replied coolly. The jock, JC, pushed her against a locker. His eyes seemed to mock her and she was lifted off the ground with pure hate.
"JC, take her out... slowly." Justin was being held up by three cheerleaders, and hadn't yet wiped away the blood. "Make her pay."
"Guys, just leave her alone-" A voice near the out skirts of the group sounded in protest and a boy struggled through the tight circle that had been formed.
"Shut up Chris! Justin got hurt. She deserves every pain JC can think of!" Brittany snapped angrily at Justin's side. Another of Justin's cronies put out his arm and halted the protester.
JC smiled cruelly for a moment, "hear that Batgirl?" JC laughed mockingly for a moment, then straightened his face. "I’m going to try every arcane method I’ve ever learned for causing pain. I’ve been itching to see how much pain these cause, and not to a pillow, although when I’m done your going to wish you were one." JC laughed maniacally then raised his fist and aimed.
"Is there a problem here?" A voice resounded angrily through the halls as if thunder. A large hand landed on JC's shoulder, startling him. Kate fell to a crumpled heap on the floor as JC let go of her.
"Mister Drake?!" Justin said in astonishment, everyone else whispered fearfully.
"That's my name- don't wear it out. Now is there a reason Miss Gordon should suffer?" He stated the last part to Justin particularly .
"She slapped me!" Justin whined like a girl.
"You deserve it. You also deserved that nicely placed kick too." Mister Drake shrugged plainly, "I heard everything, and frankly, I'm not pleased with what I heard."
He walked past the group and to the now standing Kate. "If you bruise, make sure to tell your mother its not my fault, I don't want to get yelled at again." He gupled weakly. "You know how she gets" Kate smiled kindly. Mister Drake turned to the group one more time, "oh yes, I don't take kindly to anyone that calls my sister a whore."
"What do you mean Mister Drake?" Brittany asked weakly. She didn't want to know the answer.
"I don't take kindly to anyone that calls my sister a whore" Tim restated coldly. "She is a very acceptable young lady and far from that. And don't call my niece pathetic. She could beat your as-behind any day, and.. she sort of did…today." He finished firmly and glared at the group. His eyes a fiery blue for a moment. Mister Drake placed an arm around Kate's shoulders and turned to walk away, then he stopped. "Oh, and Mister Cleary?"
"Yea?" Justin visibly gulped, an unusual sight.
"If we weren't in a school, I wouldn't of put what you said about her mother so nicely." Mister Drake hadn't said anything, but Justin was sure he didn't mean just talking not nice. "I warn you, Kate has unseen friends in very high places. Getting on her bad side is a severely bad idea." He stared cruelly for but a moment then smiled, "I'll see you all tomorrow."
With that Mister Drake turned and escorted his niece from the building. All eyes were on them as they passed.
The small group stared in silent horror. Brittany was trembling fearfully and Justin shook with anger. This wasn't over yet. Kate would pay. They just had to wait for the right time. Justin turned to his cronies.
"Let's go. We'll take care of her later" Justin growled bitterly. He rubbed his sore cheek and ran a finger across the new scab. Brittany looked at him, her eyes wide with fear and confusion.
"But Mr. Dee-"
"Mr. Dee can be taken care of. Move out" Justin barked. When he made a command, every one listened. Slowly the crowd dispersed. The hall cleared, leaving only one jock behind.
Chris let an amused grin slip across his face and turned to go. His grandmother was going to be furious at him for being so late... but it really didn't matter. It looked like Justin finally had a worthy opponent. Kate had left whisker like marks along his face, a reminder of Kate’s nick-name. Meow. Where did who come up with that any ways?
