Lois slowly raised her head and glanced at the clock.10:15pm! She hadn't realised it was so late. How quickly time flew!Could it actually be three weeks since the horrible ordeal? It seemed like just three days!
******************************
She hadn't even eaten.Lately, she had been so busy taking on Clark's assignments that her burgeoning load was growing even heavier.
Clark....never did she think it would feel so nice to hear his voice and to see his face-the face she always took for granted and the voice she always tried to ignore.Of late,he was nowhere around. The leave he rarely used was going rapidly now."Family troubles",was all he would say to anyone and Perry was finding it hard not to hire someone to fill his place.Lois and Jimmy pleaded with him. "Leave it to me",she would say to him with dogged determination."I can handle it.Kent will be back soon-I'm sure of it."
"Sure,Chief,"Jimmy would pipe in."We can handle it.How can you refuse us? You get two for the price of one."
"Okay, you two,"Perry answered with a wan smile."But if it gets too tough and too stressing, you let me know.I don't want my workers on edge- Lord knows we have enough of that in this city already."
*****************************
A knock at the door would have sent Lois jumping out of her skin-if that were humanly possible. Her eyes narrowed."Now what?"she snapped."I don't have time to entertain visiitors-especially uninvited ones."
She stared at the complicated lock she had bought the week before."You can't be too careful nowadays,"she had said to the freckle-faced kid at the cash register. Knock, KNOck,KNOCK!!The pounds became more insistent. Warily, she edged toward the door and peered through the peep-hole."Ohh,"she groaned,as she put her hand to her stomach."Just what I don't need....
