Time Waits For No One (Part 4)

Bruce sat in his chair and listened to Barbara tell the story of what had happened. Though
he wasn’t saying anything, his face looked slightly angry. Fighting to control himself, he
finally stamped down the anger and asked quietly, “So what are you going to do now?”

Barbara looked around the room, as though searching for inspiration. As a last resort she
looked over where Dick stood. He shook his head for a moment, then said quietly,
“We’re going to find him. What else?”

Jake stood looking at the unconscious form of Robin, “What should we do with the bird,
boss?” one fo the men asked. Jake gently tapped his chin as he thought about it, “I’m not
sure yet... for now just stick him in the basement. I’ll take care of keeping him fed. I’m
just gonna have to think on this one.”

Jake’s men nodded and walked out of the room, leaving Jake alone.

Dick sat in front of the batcave computer, running through information as fast as he could
manage. Barbara walked up and stood behind him, “Find anything yet?”

Dick continued to look at the screen as he answered, “Not yet, but I think I’m getting
close... I’m running through every bit of information about Mayor Frank D. Hall that is on
the computer, and that the computer can find on every accessible network. Let’s see... his
wife died three years ago in a house fire. His mom and dad both died in a car accident.
His brother is still alive, but his location is unknown.”

Barbara stood staring at the floor as she leaned against the chair Dick sat in... suddenly it
came to her, “What’s the brother’s name?”

Dick scrolled through, “Jake Hall.” then he glanced over, “Why?”

Barbara was now looking intently at the screen, “Is there any information about a possible
falling out?”

Dick scrolled through the information and suddenly slumped back... it was so obvious!
“Jake was married to Marilynn Holcomes. Two years into the marriage, they divorced
and she married Frank.”

Barbara smiled slightly, “And there, we have our motive.”

Mayor Frank D. Hall sat with his head in his hands... “What me? Why now?” he moaned
to himself.

“Don’t like the way the dice have fallen, Franky boy? Or should I call you David?”

Mayor Hall looked up quickly, “What? Who’s there?”

Jake slowly stepped out of the shadows, smoking a cigar, and smiling evily, “I heard you
had some trouble... brother. And I thought you might like a word of encouragement.”

Mayor Hall looked at him then said softly with his voice rising throughout the statement,
“It’s you... you’re the one that showed up at the banquet last night... you’re the one that
robbed the bank, burned my building, and stole the diamond!” Mayor Hall stood up, his
eyes blazing, “What the h*** do you think your doing?!”

Jake smiled, and pulled a silenced pistol out of his pocket, “Sit Frank.” When Frank did
not instantly comply his face went hard, “Sit or be shot. It’s up to you.”

Mayor Hall sat quickly and looked at him, “Why?”

Jake shook his head, “You really don’t know do you... this is for taking Marilynn from
me. She and I had a happy marriage, until you stepped in and decided you wanted her!
She was my wife, until you came in and screwed things up... and I mean literally on that
last part!”

Mayor Hall shook his head, “It wasn’t my fault, Jake! She came to me and coerced me!”

Jake’s eyes were cold as he said quietly, “I’m sure that’s just the way it happened.” A
bullet flew from the gun, and Mayor Hall, stared down at his chest where blood was
streaming forth. He lookd up, shock across his face. Two more shots, and he was down,
unmoving.

Jake took one last puff at his cigar, and then dropped it on his dead brother, “Sleep well...
brother!” Then he turned and walked out of the building.

Nightwing and Batgirl raced towards City Hall on their motorcycles. Just as they pulled
up, a huge explosion rocked the area, and city hall collapsed upon itself. Batgirl looked
forward in shock, but Nightwing face was as hard as stone, “He got here before us.”

**************************************************

Robin woke up, staring at the ceiling. Bound and gagged there was nothing he could do
but wait. Closing his eyes again, he thought about the others, and wondered if they would
make it in time...

Well, first of all, I'd like to say welcome to the fanfic boards! Next, I will say that I'm enjoying your story so far. You know that I was gone for awhile, but now I'm back. Also, thanks for putting my ideas to good use for the Returning The Favor story while I was away. I'll be adding onto it after this.

As for your story, I thought that you weren't going to be too violent with it! Not that I mind, but I vaguely remember you saying that when we talked. Anyways, I'm interested to see where you'll actually take this story now! It seems that this Jake guy has accomplished everything that he set out to do. I wonder what's left for him? Then again he does have Robin as a hostage.


All in all, a cool story.

I must appologize for a monumental error on my part. In doing research for this story, I read up on Batman and Nightwing comics... in one comic I was led to believe that Oracle and Barbara were different people because of certain actions that were taken in the story. Due to this fact, in my story I put in both Barbara and Oracle. Though I cannot fix this problem in this story, I will be careful not to make the same mistake twice. My appologize to my readers.

You could always make an alternative character be Oracle and explain how she came to be known, or just leave her identity a mystery. Whatever you want to do is fine. I really am looking forward to seeing more installments of this story, so don't worry about the mistake and post more please!
