Final Fantasy VII: Open Ended? *Spoilers*

    Like This Thread!
This is a topic I've conversed with on other Final Fantasy Boards. My views on it are very rigid... but I find intelligent conversation on the matter is hard to find... especially concerning the Tifa/Cloud/Aeris issue, which on the whole seems to be argued on the basis of who you liked more, or whether Tifa was dressed like a 'lady of the night' or not.. (I'm not lying - the names I've heard posters call Tifa for her dress have been unbelieveable).

So rather than me just rant through what I think and bore you silly, I was interested what the general feeling was to Final Fantasy VII ending from bright articulate posters rather than the 'Aerith suxs/Tifa rulz' variant.

Did you think the end was open ended? Or was it all explained for you? Were you happy with the story and character resolution? Did it make sense? Did it satisfy you?

Yes it was opened ended. We got very vague ending. All we really know is that the Holy spell stopped Sephiroth's Meteor spell. However, The ending never really say what happened to Cloud, Tifa, et al. The only character that had anything shown was Red 13, and that was far into the future when all the human characters are long since dead except maybe Vincent.

Constast that to , FF4's ending. That ending told what happened to every character you ever played, even that wimpy bard prince.

The ending gets two thumbs waaaaaaaaaay down from me.

I don't dig on games that end in a big explosion and now final wrap up. Not to mention I hear that Holy whiped humanity off the face of the Earth making all your hours of gaming worthless and all trials you surivived also worthless.

That was up there as one of the worst endings to a game ever, especially considering that all the stuff leading up to it almost made it one of the best games ever.

Personaly, I see that FF7 is the only game in the FF series that could posibly link into Kingdom Hearts due to it's ending.

I meen think about it in the So many years that make up the time between the final sepharoth battle and the ending whos to say that the heros of that game diden't lead thier lives normaly/Go on to more adventures (case, Cloud and Hades)
Of corse that leaves the matter of the heartless distroying FF7's world in mid air but KD 2 might clear that up.

    Wouldn't work. Remember....

    Spoiler:
Squall (or someone) said he, Aerith, Cid, and Yuffie are from Hollow Bastion. Cloud is from there as well and we can assume Sephiroth as well since it is now inferred that all FF characters (save Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie) are from Hollow Bastion. Hollow Bastion is the FF world.

Funny as on the slightly off topic of Cloud and Aeris. Aeris fans like to cite KH as proof of Clouds interest in Aeris. KH I found was a disappointment for the reason in your spoiler - there was little to no way of canonising it to FF7/8/10 etc.

As for the ending, to me it wasn't open ended at all - I've read many posts on this, and excessive replaying has helped correlate this. Whether it's right is clearly your own opinion, but I've yet to see a good counter argument.

    Spoiler:

First off we Holy coming to attack the metor. It fails. As it looks like they are doomed. Either Holy is not strong enough, or is 'helping' meteor, as the dialogue suggests (although most call this line a mistranslation from the Japanese).
The lifestream pops up to everyone's surprise (implied to guided by Aeris) and attacks meteor.
The end shot is of the crew watching, wondering what there fate will be...

    The End..

Sort of. You have to see FF7 as story or film, it uses definate writing techniques and thats where people miss out.
You are left unsure of what happened till the end of the credits.
We see the future. Red XIII. He survived. It would stand to reason if he survived the others did too. That's the implication. Unless...
What if the planet as Red's grandfather suggested, decided Human's were not to continue? Then Red would be alive but the others dead.

As the picture fades out.. this question is also answered. We hear children's laughter.

The Planet wasn't to be selective. It was said it would wipe out ALL humans and not just Midgars population or some... clearly some survived, so the Planet chose to keep humans. Therefore, as far as can be attained, the crew did survive as did the human race, albeit reduced thanks to the devastation of Meteor on Midgar and surrounding areas..

Whether Technology was rebuked or taken from the humans is unclear, but you get the feeling it's a fresh start.

I was miffed with the end first time around, but more or less everything is resolved.

    Spoiler:
All characters issues are resolved by the end of disk 2 - including Tifa's (with a dodgy scene on the beach) and then the issue of the planet and Sephiroth is resolved on Disk 3. Again, see it like a story. The wrapping up of character events comes before the final showdown.

The end teases the viewer. It may not immediately satisfy, but read the above and see it again... it does make sense and makes for a more fulfilling ending!

Children laughing could've been the ghost memory of humanity or Red XIII's children....

I hope someday that rumoured "alternate ending" comes out. Until then, make mine Skies of Arcadia.

And there's a Spoiler warning outside the thread... don't think we need to spoiler box everything.

Well, I really don't they were Red's kids.. they were human voices..

Ghostly kids... Hmm, I can't see it myself... FFVII answers all its questions. The kids are there to show that humanity survives but now lives in a different form.. besides Midgar wasn't a kids place. I see no reason why kids would be chosen to represent Midgar.

Someone once pointed out the official answer that's.... somewhere on the internet.

And that official answer says that humanity got a big fat vaporization for all their troubles.

What a ****ty ending that would be.

I've actually been pretty pissed at 7's ending for some time now, at one point in my "never got a date" phase waaaayy on back, I actually wrote a 30-40 page ending just to ease my mind.

It wasn't because of the bad ending, it was because I remember in Gamefan Magazine (before it was axed) they had some like 12 year old girl write her own ending in. Well.....

....Barret and the nanny got married. Yuffie straightened out. Cid used the wierdest places for @!#$ and so forth. And Aeris came back and told everyone, "I love all of you so much."

Because there was no other endings I had read, this stuck out as the definitive ending in my mind. AND I SURE AS HELL WASN'T HAVING THAT.

I have no clue what happened to my ending, but I don't care, regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all.....wait, I went into a KH moment.

Regardless of what people say, we need a FFVII-2. FFX isn't deserving of the first ever squaresoft Final Fantasy TRUE SEQUEL. If they gave it to 8 or 9 I woulda stabbed someone. 7 doesn't only DESERVE the sequel, it practically BEGS for one.

On another note, if anyone watches the crap with Red and his kids at the VERY end of the credits, does it remind you of the opening act of "The Lion King?"

Yeah but RedXIII did talk afterall. I don't know how his voice sounded, but I imagine that it sounded somewhat like a human's and that his laugh would as well. Not that I disagree with your theory or anything.

You mean Cloud crossdressed and dated Barret for nothing? BOO! JK

Well, from I remember from the ending, what's of Midgard is still standing and grown over with plants but not a hole in the ground.

Yeah, but if you were trying to imply to an audience that it was Red's kids, you wouldn't use human sounding voices...

As for the Vaporization vats for humanity... doesn't follow with the kids voices (kids symbolise a new age, the turning of a new leaf, as well as existence of life) or the story.. (The planet was to decide if the ENTIRITY of humanity was to be wiped. No exceptions. For their to be kids, there would be exceptions..) I've never seen this 'document' and like most rumours of official sources, they normally turn out to be from the 'uncle who worked for Square' source which was revealed to be bogus long ago!

FFVII does not have a happy ending, and that annoys a lot of people. I like it, a lot. The human race is one of the most brutal creations to ever exist, and this story is the consequence of their misjudgment. Or something lame like that...There is nothing wrong with the ending in my view. They saved the planet, at a severe cost, but they saved it. The fact that they left Aeris dead was a good thing, and showing Red XIII as the only surviving member in a healed world was a nice touch (since he could live that long). It was anything but a disappointment, it was a diversion from the sick, cliched, "happy endings" we get all too often in media.

Oh I'm not saying I hate the ending for what happened to the people, I'm saying that I hate the ending cause we never get a definitive answer that THAT'S what happened in the game. It also doesn't make any sense as to WHY that happened. I thought all the mako energy was destroying Meteor. It's just all so confusing.

I also think it coulda done with a sequel. I highly doubt humans were completely wiped out, maybe some but after what Cloud and them tried to do i figure plenty of Humans were left. Though a sequel would be nice*come on Sqaure Soft!* or atleast make another FF with materias!

I'm not saying that those kids were definetly RedXIII's, I'm just saying it's a possibility since he talked and we don't see the actual children who are laughing. Then again, how would he mate to have children anyway?

The creator, whatshisname, mentioned the possibility of making a sequel to FF7. If he really intended for the human race to have been wiped out at the end of FF7, I seriously doubt he would have said a sequel was possible.

    ...

I would hate it if humans were punished by being wiped out after humans went through so much trouble to save it. I mean, it's sounds kind of ungrateful... what's the point if you can't enjoy it? If that was the case, I'd bring down the planet with me.
