    Best free MMORPGs?

    Like This Thread!
OK, .hack//SIGN has got me a little interested in MMORPGs all of a sudden, but I don't have the cash(or the PC power)to afford a huge game like Everquest, so let me ask: What free MMORPGs do you think are the best out there?

For the most part....tough luck. Just about all good MMORPGs(or at least the ones that I know of...) are pay to play...

Some people do like Runescape, though. Personally, I found it really boring. I'm not sure what the actual site address is but it shouldn't be too hard to find...
I could deal with trying to process

    But not with interference

There is a PC demo of Phantasy Star Online that lets you play online for free.

The only problem is that you're limited to 20 minutes of game-time. But you can just restart the game, I guess. It's fun, and gives you a good taste of what the real thing is like.

Pretty much all the commercial and internet available MMORPGs are pay-to-play. (The good ones, anyway.) I've been in your situation before... Some of them look pretty darn cool (especially some of the lesser-known internet ones) but I don't have the money for the monthly fee.

For now, the best you can get to a "free" MMORPG experience would be to purchase a single player game for the computer with a free multiplayer mode. For example, Diablo II, which lets you play on Blizzard's battle.net servers for free.

(And as far as Runescape goes... Eh. I tried it a few times, but never enjoyed it or got into it.)

Diablo II is the best free game out there, but it's not really an MMORPG.

Well, although they are not "Massive", and if you don't mind the lack of graphics, can always try the forefathers to online Multiplayer RPGs: MUDs, MUSHs and others of the like. Most are free.

Only problem with Diablo now is that players are hacking the hell outta it... At least, that's what I've heard. Nowadays, the only online game I play is Warcraft III.

The old school Meridian 59 was the best. The best one of today is Warcraft III.

Not really. There are a few hacked items, and quite a few duped items, and people use maphack, but that's about it.

Okay, it's a text game, but one of THE best text games out there, totally free and you can interact with others:

It's even better if you're a fan of Discworld.

    Later...

Yeah... That's pretty hacked, if ya ask me. But if it isn't all that noticable during gameplay, then I suppose it doesn't matter. The same thing's currently happening with SC... Right before Warcraft III came out, EVERYONE was using freakin' maphack, making it damn difficult to get a decent game started.

I like Warcraft III because currently, there are no real hacks available for it. And for the ones that do exist, almost no one uses them... Plus, it's got WARCHASERS!

Of course, the hacking situation with Warcraft III may change in a few years...

There are hacks. I know this one kid who starts off with 3 Heros when the game begins. So he just rushes the bases.

The PSO demo is a lot of fun.

There's much more to find in the full version, but the full version costs money per month, so I'll stick with the limited content, thank you very much.

Provides thrills either way, but I'm not gonna buy PSO just to play offline. And I'm definitely not buying a hunter's license.

PSO PC is the same cost as other PSO games. 8 bucks a month.

Hrm, wonder if they'll also offer the 16 bucks for 3 months special package the Japanese get.

Sega really needs to make an English page for PSO.

There are plenty of hacks (maphack, disconnect hack, etc) for Warcraft III, but people are afraid to use them ever since Blizzard went medieval on the hackers last Friday and closed over 27,000 hacker accounts (also here).

As for free MMPORGs. The only way I know of to play for free currently is to get into the beta for a game or work for a company that makes the game.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I said that for the hacks that do exist, not many people use them... Particularly because of Blizzard's strict (but appreciated) action.
