I suppose this can be the offical thread used for talkback and whatnot.

Internet seems pretty quiet lately, as if we all know that we're going to be let down by the upcoming announcement.

Wasn't is suppose to happen yesterday tho?

Mods, feel free to edit and adjust as needed, if you feel a poll or anything needs to be added.

    ...

It's supposed to happen really soon, like this week.

    Here's the rumors I've heard-

    -Nintendo buys Capcom-
The most sane rumor out there. Capcom's essentially pledged GCN development, and they could either rush out other system games or port them to GCN. Resident Evil Online could use Sega SNAP for it's net service. Naturally, Megaman would join up in the next Smash Bros.

    -Nintendo buys Sega-
After they announced so many PS2 ports recently, I doubt it.

    -Nintendo buys Namco-
I originally considered this, with Link being exclusive to GCN SC2. But, after Spawn was put in PS2 SC2, I doubt it.

    -Nintendo sues Sony-
Logically, this shoulda been done a while ago. "Playstation" was Nintendo's term for the Nintendo/Sony Super Nintendo CD-Rom hybrid unit, but as plans fell through, they broke up. "Sony Playstation" was mainly a bitter jab back at Nintendo.

    -Nintendo gets craploads of money-
Based off the last one, Nintendo would make 1 or 2 billion off of back and future royalties (Pretty much assuring there'd be no "Playstation 3", but another name), unless Sony valued their brand loyalty so much that they'd pay Nintendo forever. And believe me, Nintendo would NEVER sell the name off. Unless it's really a joint-copyright, in which neither company would sell. This'll make the selling of Rare seem like the sales of Pikmin discs.

    -Nitnedo goes Smash Crazy-
Well, if they get money, they gotta spend it. Another rumor is that they'd create a group comprising of the big guys (Square/Enix, Capcom, Konami, Sega, etc.), that would make games for Nintendo. They could still make games for other systems, but Nintendo would have incentives to create for them.

This is the stupidest rumor I've heard for the "Megaton Announcement" thus far.
    M E G A T O N
The Sonic, Megaman, Mario photo has a little something extra. It also spells PS2.

"Nintendo is set to file suit against Sony next week, declaring that the Playstation brand, and all of the profits made by Sony from it's sale, belong to Nintendo. While reading over the original contract between Sony and Nintendo (Sony were to make a CD drive for the Super Nes, entitled the Playstation), a lawyer for Nintendo noticed some key wording which showed that it was Sony's responsibility to make the drive, and that they broke the contract, not Nintendo, like initially believed.

According to sources, Nintendo is almost assured a victory, gaining all the profit's made by Sony off the Playstation since its introduction in 1996. Even if Nintendo do not win outright, they are guaranteed the rights to the Playstation name, and Sony will have to immediatley change the name of their console."

This is what will make Nintendo systems go flying from the shelves people. The "Nintendo Playstation," people won't know the difference, unsuspecting customers everywhere will be buying Nintendo, thinking that it's Sony. Sony is in a world of hurt."
How Stupid do they think people are ??? They won't know the difference ? Suuuure.

I think they are pretty much right. Parents are dumb. Their kids want a Playstation, they'll buy a Playstation. They dont care if its Sony or not.

Chris, could you post a link to where you found that?

Like I said in the other thread about Nintendo suing Sony over the Playstation name, I doubt this will ever happen.

There is a little thing called a statute of limitation. I'm not sure what the limit is in civil cases but I'm pretty sure that it's less than ten years, it might even be less than five. Any lawyer worth their salt wouldn't touch a case that had expired since it would immediately be thrown out of court. It all sounds like some sort of bitter fanboy wet dream to me.

If the Megaton announcement does happen (wasn't already debunked?) I'm still betting it turns out to be some sort of on-line deal.

    ...

The picture was fake; somebody wanted attention.

Okay, say 10 years for the Statute of Limitations?

1993 was the last I heard of the Super Nintendo Playstation, I believe.

I can see why Nintendo waited this long. If they get revenue from the usage of Playstation, why not wait as long as possible? Itf they brought this case against Sony in 1996 or 1997, they'd make a million, and Sony would choose a different name for a later system, thereby cutting Nintendo off from the money.

Wait until Sony makes billions off of it, then get major money. The next Sony system won't be called Playstation if Nintendo really does go through, as Sony will not want to pay them any more money.

And the Nintendo Playstation is a load of bull. Gamecube will stay Gamecube, but the next system could be the Nintendo Playstation III. Nintendo regains brand loyalty, gets mucho dinero.

A Playstation by any other name wouldn't sell as sweet.

    Weird how things work.

    Nintendo drops the Megaton

Out of Tokyo this morning (mid-day in Japan) Nintendo has announced the move that could change gaming forever.

(Tokyo)- In an announcement early this morning, Nintendo and Sony executives announced that they had come to a legal agreement over the rights to the name 'Playstation'. The name, which was originaly given to a joint-venture CD rom based add-on for the Super Nintendo, was technically, a joint-owned copyright. Sony has agreed to pay Nintendo 10% of all past and future proceeds made off of the name. This ammounts to a whopping 2.3 billion USD in back-payments. Nintendo will allow Sony to pay the money back in installments instead of a lump sum over the next 20 years. However, Nintendo has plans for their new found source of income. They will immidietly finance a new game studio called 'The Artists Group' which will feature members of Sega, Nintendo, Namco, Capcom, Konami, Tecmo, Square-Enix and more to collaborate on projects for Nintendo systems, and exchange copyrighted properties. The first projects announced out of this new studio are a new RPG using various gaming icons as the central charachters, a new Smash Brothers game, featuring mascots from accross the companies, including Pacman, Megaman, Sonic, Mario and more, as well as a new Sega-AM2 developed racing game that will also feature multiple icons from the various companies. The final collaboration is the recently announced Viewtifull Joe from Capcom stuidios. Nintendo has also promised that completely original more collaborations between studios will take place in the future, but for now, they will be focusing on quality content showcasing the newfound bond between the various development houses. Contrary to internet rumors however, Nintendo has not as of yet purchased any software developers, and as such, all members of the Artists Group will be allowed to explore development on other systems of their own accord. More as it develops.

As cool as that Megaton "announcement" sounds, I think it's exactly what it sounds like, too good to be true. I could be wrong, but that site doesn't look the least bit reliable!

Hey I got an idea if Sony has to change the name of the PlayStation....

    ES2!!!!

    EntertainmentStation 2!

Sony Rep: While the ES2 is very popular with videogames it does more than just that. It plays CDs, DVDs, and with a modem, you can make it go online. We changed the name of PlayStation 2 to EntertainmentStation 2 to help emphasize the "enertainment" found from us at Sony.

As you can see, an obvious parody of the WWE.

[indent]Nice news story, I'll have to check around the internet now to see if the news has broken regarding the new Toonami network, the debut of Gargoyles 2198 and Tenchi choosing a woman. Hopefully the real Megaton will be dropped soon. (Not that I know that wasn't real or anything, I just can't see it being likely.)

All of those are fake. If there is a Mega ton (Im not so sure anymore) It should be released during hte V Jump Festival, wich is December 21-22. Its probably a piece of software. Possibly by Square Enix. Square Enix vs Nintendo RPG ala Kingdom Hearts......

Dude, there IS no Megaton. Period. It's bogus. Trace the whole thing back to its origins. If I remember correctly, a not-too-reputable Japanese game magazine (read: not Famitsu) mentioned (in passing, really), that Nintendo was going to drop a huge megaton announcement in the fall. Every other stupid rumor which came out of that article since has been completely unfounded- so, the Megaton doesn't exist. It's one little rumor in a foreign Game Mag that was taken completely out of hand. The Famitsu folks said they haven't heard a thing about it... and Famitsu always has its head to the ground. So, call me cynical, but I don't think it's happening.
"So pray for peace until you're hoarse, and maybe fear will run its course.
May God forgive us our insanity, and we'll keep pressing on."

Now -that's- a convincingly authentic looking news story. No style errors, grammar flubs or mispelled words there. Real news stories, of couse, always avoid using named sources whenever possible or stating hard facts, also.
