Price War (PS2 Price Drop)

The PS2 has finally dropped in price from $299 down to $199, matching the GC's launch price. Nintendo had previously stated that if the PS2 dropped in price it would in turn lower the price of the GC, but whether they're prepared to take a $100 cut per system yet isn't certain. Where this leaves Microsoft if they choose to keep the price of their system where it is ($299) is questionable. Could the PS2 price cut lead to a price war between the big three? Expect for price announcements from Nintendo and Microsoft at E3 later this month.

Further price cuts:
PSOne - $49 (from $99)
PSOne and LCD Screen Combo - $149 (from $199)
PS2 Memory Card - $24 (from $34)
PS2 Dual Shock 2 - $24 (from $34)
PSOne Dual Shock - $19 (from $29)

Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has also stated that software costs are also being considered for price cuts (currently $49.99).

If the GC dropped to $100 I'd sooo buy one right now, rather than waiting until this summer when I have some heavy/steady work, what with being a poor college student at the moment.

But right now, I don't think either Nintendo or Microsoft can afford a price drop, well Microsoft probably can.

Sony's had their current system on the market longer and it has the largest user base, they can afford to.

And yes, the prices of games should go down. There are a bunch of ones I'd love to buy right now, but I'm poor. Stupid education.

I knew this was going to happen about a year ago on the other forum that I was on... They all made fun of me and said Sony is the king and they'll never lower their price...

So I left... I joined here.... I am happy with all the non-flamming threads....

I am glad, about the price cuts... But when does this price cut start??

As long as GC drops at least $50, I'll buy one. $100 would be awesome.

Also excited about the possibility of cheaper games. I've always thought a lot of the PS2 games were a bit overpriced for the longevity they had.

Y'know what? Xbox was supposed to drop first, to 200, around E3, but sony did it quicker. Also, Nintendo is DEFINITELY NOT going to lower the price. They said so.....It would be good if they did, though

Like DVD's when they first came out, I always wait. This would be wonderful if both systems were reduced. Do you think this would effect the prices of DVD Players in general??

So... who here has seen this news? Xbox is now retailing at $199... effective immediately!

With all of the current major systems now sitting at $199... I wonder if Nintendo will lower the GC prices... it would definitely encourage me to buy one...

GameCube is still $199, and I doubt it will drop. They dropped the price of their Game Boy Advance and then their stock dropped as well. I'd say it's safe to say all 3 systems are locked in at $200 for now.

and this gives me a great reason to go out and buy a PS2... $300 was too much..but $200...that sounds about right..

According to cnn.com, Nintendo has now stated that they have no plans to drop the price of the GC, and wil lbe staying out of the price wars for now.

We may hear something different from E3. The rumor floating right now is that they will drop the price to 149, 129, or possibly even 99 bucks.

I'm betting Nintendo drops to atleast 150 before the end of 2002. I may actually get a PS2 now but with PS3 coming out soon it'd be like Dreamcast all over again.

Get the system love the system, soon after find out the system has been killed.
