King.com (Makers of Candy Crush Saga) Trademarks the Word "Candy"

I'm personally not happy about this. This basically means that if they wanted to, they could--among other things--sue Hasbro/Milton Bradley, the makers of "Candy" Land (as one of the comments points out). The second incarnation of Strawberry Shortcake has a character called Banana "Candy", so even American Greetings might not be safe (of course, AG could back to the previous name, "Banana Twirl", but still).

What does everyone else think? Could this pave the way for other generic words to be trademarked? Personally, I hope not. Another comment expressed hope that this would be reversed, but is that even possible?

No they couldn't. That's not how trademarks work, as you can only trademark something within the context of your product. In this case, King trademarked "Candy" in the context of video games, meaning they can sue other companies who use the word "Candy" in video game titles (which they have already done), but not someone who uses it on a board game or a character in a kids' franchise (the two examples you mention).

But I agree this is dumb. Words this common shouldn't be allowed to be trademarked (I believe most countries don't allow it. This seems to be a flaw in the US Trademark system.)

Just wait. It will be challenged and defeated. I doubt a software company can out-lawyer someone like Google or Apple when they eventually protest.

According to this, the trademark was granted for Europe, not the US.

It's most definitely trademarked in the U.S. as well.

NBC says they're trying that BS with "saga" too. What the heck, a bejeweled knockoff can't even count as a saga.

Only in North America, though. Europe still has to deal with it...
