Hmm I hear the controllers are kind of annoying. My little bro says they're shaped like potatoes.
Anyways, my older brother has one and he seems to like it just fine. As to my personal opinion of the system, I really couldn't tell you. I've never even played it before.
If you don't already have PS2 or GameCube. I mean almost all the good games on XBox are heading to the other systems anyway. Even the so called "exclusives".

Don't do it! Don't give your money to the evil Bill Gates empire!
Ahem.....er.......
Anyway. Honestly, I'd recommend getting the PS2 or Gamecube before getting the X-box.

Warning: extreme Nintendo Fan boy approaching....too late, he's here..
I've played both XBOX and GCN. In fact, my brother owns both. should you buy a XBOX? it all depends. If you want it just for a DVD player, just get a regular DVD player (they're down to $80-$100). If you want an XBOX to play those "Awesome" "Great" and "jaw-dropping" games, then sure. But, it's all up to you.
I personally would tell you to get a Cube or PS2. if you already have both, then, get an XBOX by all means. It's great to have all 3 systems if you can afford it, that way you don't have to worry about saying "CRAP! I want that game, but I don't have the system!".
So, it's all up to you. Check out some reviews, and screens of XBOX games and see if you like em'..

X-Box has one must have game that is only theirs and that is Halo. it is not worth the money just to play one game.
Your best bet is a PS2. They have more games to choose from. Plus if you use it as a DVD player, the PS2 is ready to use right out of the box. (The X-Box needs a special adapter.)
And Yes, I do own a PS2. I like mine and have had no problems with it.
Honestly, it's become the norm for game companies to port games to multiple consoles, so it's best to base your decision on exclusive games.
Based on that, Microsoft falls flat. Halo was great and Munch was mediocre, but the rest of the "exclusives" were utter crap. And in the near future, the vast majority of the good games coming to the Xbox will be on other systems too.
I'd suggest getting a PS2, or a Cube if you can't live without Nintendo's groovy games.

Well rggkjg1, it doesn't look look like there is anyone to say "I have an X-BOX" I can't either, but I recently got a GameCube so I'll just give you some of my drawn out decision process.
Out of the three X-BOX was the first system I eliminated for several reasons:
*That controller is just HUGE
*When I looked at the exclusive games they had I just didn't see anything I really wanted.
-I admit to not having played Halo, but I'm not a fan of first-person shooters, just because it's a first person shooter. It has to be based on something I'm interested in. Like say James Bond.
*If I need a DVD player I can either get a computer that has one or a cheap DVD player (I know several people who have one and have never had problems with it) runs about $100 or less.
*Another point with that, you buy the system to play games, not DVDs, so keep that in mind.
*There were articles that early X-BOXs were having big problems and the customer service was bad to get them replaced. Those issues may have been resolved by now.
Ultimately I went with GC over PS2 for many reasons, here are some of them:
*Faster load times
*Mario and his Nintendo buddies
*I hate the PS2 "WWF SmackDown!" games
*Price (it's a 100 bucks cheaper and memory cards are less)
**I will talk to a friend of mine who has an X-BOX and get back to you
You have to choose the best system for you based on the kind of games you want and like to play.

Speaking of this I've been meaning to tell you guys about something that happened while I was in a Detroit Target Store. This is where I first played Bloody Roar and fell in love with it.*There were articles that early X-BOXs were having big problems and the customer service was bad to get them replaced. Those issues may have been resolved by now.
The setup had the 3 standard systems, PS2, X-Box, and Game Cube... The GC had a new Demo Disc with BR, Agent under Fire, Smash Brothers, a Star Fox Video and video's of the other games. The PS2 had Jakk and Daxter and the XBox had a black screen with The Green Writing that tells you to call consumer services.
It was my first time seeing this in real life. I thought it was a lie or a fraud on the net, but right in front of my face was a malfuncted X-Box. Which just goes to show me atleast that those rumors are not false. Belive it or now that was the most exciting thing I saw in Detroit.

not to defend XBOX, but that is due to leaving the system on all day, and it over-heating. if you go and buy it, it won't do that, unless you leave it on all day.Originally posted by Chris Sanders MSX

However, you think Microsoft would send the stores some better store display ones to use, after all, it IS on all day there..

i have played x box and my brother has ps2. i think system part of ps2 is better, but the dvd drive in my expirience sux. Every person who i have talked to has had alot of trouble with the dvd drive on it. Halo is great but every other game i have played is not very good. so overall i would say if you dont have a dvd player just get a cheap one and buy ps2.

One word: NO
Trust me, if you want real games, then get Gamecube, PS2, or even Dreamcast. Damn man! Even the craptacular Sega Saturn is better then X-Box! Plus the controllers are almost as big as the late Andre the Giant!

BTW Penguin - You don't like the "Smackdown!" game? Weird... The "Smackdown!" games are the best thing Sony ever released.
