Well, with the PSN gettin' PS2 legacy classics (Shadow Hearts, SH2: FTNW etc...). That would sorta defeat the idea of having to insert PS2 discs.
This is something I've been wondering about for a while now. PS3 used to support all 3 playstation era games, then they axed the emotion engine and lost PS2 support, and now they are releasing PS2 games on the PSN. I'm really hoping at some point we will be able to revisit some of our favorite games from the last generation that we already own instead of having to re-purchase them off the PSN or hook up a separate system. Being able to play most any Playstation game on one system again would be awesome, so I am hoping they release some kind of general emulation software for PS2 games. I would even be willing to pay for it (not that I feel like I should have to). They've obviously figured something out for some games..

Not to be nitpicky, but SH2 is Covenant, SH3 is From the New World. It's one of my favorite series' lol
I'm not so sure we'll be seeing backward compatibility with PS2 discs returning. If I remember correctly, this program is meant to get those hard to find gems back out there. And now that Nintendo will be removing GC compatibility from the Wii, I believe that makes zero current gen consoles that have backward compatibility with the previous generation. The obvious exception being the consoles already out there, plus Microsoft's small library that they updated the X360 to have available. I think we have seen the end of current gen consoles having actual backward compatibility.
By the way, I may be completely wrong with some that previous paragraph.
Never, the PS3 runs an emulator to get these games working. This emulator is far from perfect, and likely won't work with a lot of PS2 games. This is an expensive, and active thing to develop and make better over time. They'll want you to pay, so there's no point in enabling disc emulation.

I think Sony is looking forward and not back, as evidenced by digital copies of Vita games being available the same day as a physical copy. Those who really care should go / should have gone for a refurbished old PS3 as I did. Good PS2 systems are quite findable though.
Sad but true: PS2 discs will eventually be to us what NES and Super NES cartridges are now. Some are already kinda rare and more costly than they should be. My Gamestop just recently gutted its many shelves of used PS2 games. They are not in the store anymore. What you really want to find, I would find now. It's going to get harder to find things, and we've seen digital selection be far from thorough.

With your harsh replies, makes me wonder why this topic was created at all. And why should you care if PS3 will be getting PS2 discs?

Don't confuse being candid with being "harsh", as if we're giving him a hard time (which you are by questioning the worth of the topic in the first place, by the way). People find compatibility desirable because a lot of us enjoy versatility and the PS2 had a huge library. The PS3 was also capable of upscaling PS2 games, which is a feature I use and am satisfied with.

Yeah, I liked being able to upscale my PS2 games and honestly just being able to use the PS3 controllers was nice, as I never got any wireless PS2 ones. And I understand that companies are moving forward and want to make money, however I don't think they should be going out of their way to remove backwards compatibility, it just seems needless and stupid. I don't own a Wii but losing GC support seems really dumb.
Just for instance my friend owns Odin Sphere for the PS2 and they just released it for the PSN. It would be nice if he was somehow able to play it on his PS3 without having to buy it again is all I'm saying. Not that they're about to be like "hey put your old ps2 discs in the drive and if we scan it and find it's legit you get a digital version for free!" Would be nice tho..
Hmm, I don't have much to say, but I would think Sony is doing some form of backwards compatibility with all the HD remakes (Devil May Cry HD collection YAY).
Talk about news, though, I didn't even know PS2 games were being released on PSN.. (I may have to actually start using PSN)

I know this isn't a PS2 game, but I really, REALLY wish Intelligent Cub would get a re-release. I've been waiting years to log on the internet see an announcement about a re-release.
