It's interesting that there's gong to be DLC but no harddrive. I guess there won't be full downloadable games. I know it's going to support USB hard-drives, but I'm doubtful many gamemakers will support something that doesn't come standard with the system and I'm wondering if there are technical limitations that would make streaming a full game over USB problematic. Of course, maybe Nintendo plans to rely on cloud storage for most of this, but that would suck a bit because you'd have to be connected to the net to play your games.

I'm not sure we can consider anything confirmed at this point regarding hardware.

The Wii homebrew community has full Wii games running off USB hard drives and, from what I've read, they run without any technical problems and even load faster than from discs. Now, the Wii U will no-doubt be able to read data faster than the Wii. As a benchmark the maximum speed for USB 2.0 is 60 MB/s, which is about 13x speed by Blu-ray standards (the fastest drive on the market is 12x). If Wii U uses a proprietary version (read: non-infringing clone) of Blu-Ray, which is quite likely, there's no reason a modern USB hard drive couldn't keep up or outpace the optical drive. Especially if they do USB 3.0. Of course, all that's theoretical, as we don't know that they'll have games running off external hard drives yet...

I find that extremely unlikely. That would require some major bandwidth and I just don't see Nintendo going that route anytime soon...

Team Ninja on WiiU hardware & development:. That bit on game development being "very easy" tells me that they really are more serious about 3rd party support this time.

Technical specifications for Nintendo's next-gen Wii U console are still in flux, according to Dead or Alive 5 developer Team Ninja.

Wii U game development is "very easy" and "almost exactly like on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360", Team Ninja revealed to NGamer magazine (thanks, Gamefront.de) in an interview discussing the Wii U version of upcoming hack-n'-slash Ninja Gaiden 3.

Nintendo has remained hush on the Wii U's final capabilities - unsurprising considering the fact that the console's abilities are "changing constantly", Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi has revealed.

"They asked us what we would want from the hardware, and when we give them feedback we can see that they have definitely listened and making changes," Hayashi said. "The hardware is still changing constantly."

Team Ninja's Fumihiko Yasuda added that the Wii U's touch-screen tablet controls were "similar" to those on the DS, something the team has experience with from handheld title Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword.

"We want to introduce some elements from that into the Wii U version," Yasuda added.

AdWeek is reporting from their sources that Nintendo may be pushing video streaming for the Wii U. Not just Netflix and Hulu (which are probably going to be givens and Day/Month-1 launches), but how Microsoft has convinced Epix, Verizon, Comcast, the UFC, and others to create streaming apps for the 360 and pushed video heavily.

Interesting rumor, and may be an E3 announcement if all this is true.

I was going back through this thread and I just thought it was hilarious to see the reactions to early rumors, rumors that turned out to be completely accurate, about the Wii U. Gorbash had the best one when someone posted about the Wii U controller having a screen.

Don't believe every rumor pal, especially those that are both inane and have nothing (nothing) behind them.

Hehe, I remember being like that. Man, to think I'm now for the controller. Maybe I was just mad at Takao at the time.

How times have changed indeed, and it's only been like, what? One year?

This was recently leaked by Dual Pixels, and if this does come to be true, then it shows that Nintendo are really serious in not making the same mistake they did with the 3DS. The big gems there that piqued my curiousity however had to be World of Warcraft and Phantasy Star Online. When you think about it, the tablet is one of the best ways to bring that game over to consoles.

DoTA and World of Warcraft make this sound like a fantasy list. In its current state WoW is much too large for the 8 GB of flash memory the system was supposedly going to have, though in fairness it's possible that tidbit is no longer accurate I suppose.

That list doesn't sound very good at all. Mostly old games. There are definitely Wii ports on there and possibly Gamecube ports.

From an E-shop perspective, this isn't that bad. If these were boxed copies, then perhaps it'd be rough, but this is surprising all the more.

While it's not official yet, there are now reports of multiple retailers getting word that the Wii U will be released in November this year. The 18th to be exact, which would be consistent with when the Wii and Gamecube were launched. It's also right before the start of the holiday shopping season, so there's good reason to think this is going to be Nintendo's plan in the end.

The last few days have also seen multiple conflicting reports about how powerful the Wii U system is going to be, to the point hat citing them feels futile to me since it's just one source's word against another source's word against still some other source's word. About equal, a bit better, a bit worse, every possiblity's been suggested by now. A Nintendo of America rep chose to respond by saying "We do not focus on technology specs. We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

My response to it all is to just throw up my hands and wait for hard facts at E3.

My opinion here is the same as the PS4/Orbis thread. If it doesn't come from the horse's mouth, don't believe it.

I couldn't imagine Nintendo would try getting away with releasing hardware that is inferior in anyway to what we already have in 2012. That's basically asking to be an abandoned platform next generation, and the Wii is in the grave while the PS3, and 360 still chug along because of that.

Miyamoto's working on new Pikmin, and it looks like a Mario game for Wii U will be revealed at E3. Some excerpts from Eurogamer:

Earlier today Spanish newspaper El Mundo, which interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto while he was in Paris to promote the Nintendo-designed 3DS tour guide at the Louvre, claimed the legendary designer "anticipates that the next E3 will present a Super Mario for the new console".
"Miyamoto, who smiled during all the interview - even when he wants to change the topic because 'it's not the moment' to talk about Wii U - thinks that the experience and the new game modes of this new console won't be 'easily replicated in other devices', which will allow them to escape the new tablet competition.
Meanwhile, Miyamoto was quoted as saying to El Mundo: "I'm working on several projects but I think that I cannot talk about them all [laughs]. Some are small but important projects for Wii U. Also on a new Pikmin, which will take advantage of the new HD screen resolution, and on Luigi's Mansion for 3DS."
The Mario news ties into some speculation going on over the fact that Nintendo of America recently licensed SuperMario4.com. I'm not so sure, but if NSMB Wii gets a SMB 3-esque sequel I sure won't be complaining.

I'm guessing the Smash Bros sequel will also end up on the Wii U. I can't see Nintendo squandering resources on the Wii when they could have it for the new system if production still hasn't even started. Maybe they can actually get online play right this time around.

I wonder if this means that a new Mario game will come out with the console on launch day. Something that hasn't happened in a while (No, I don't count Super Mario 64 DS and Luigi's Mansion) My God, if this is true then this is a day one buy.

If they have even that New Super Mario Bros Mii demo available as a full game at Wii U launch, then they have a system seller for sure.

Wasn't this announced at E3 during a round table alongside the 3DS game?

There's no call for the sarcasm. Fans know Mario games for Nintendo systems are a given, but that doesn't mean we can't get excited about it anyway.

As for me, NSMB Wii was one of my favorite games for the Wii, so if there was a sequel, I'd be on board for sure. Though a Galaxy-esque game would be A-OK too.
