What were your favorite PS1 games?

    Like This Thread!
Okay kids, I need your help.

This summer I plan to blow part of my hard-earned money on video games. It has been months, probably years, since I've bought some new ones. A perfectly good PS1 is sitting under the big TV in the living room, collecting dust, getting lonely. So I ask you; what PS1 games would you recommend, and why? Also, are there games that you've really enjoyed that don't get that much publicity? (Like Threads of Fate - I luuuuuv Mint and Rue!! )

I like a good RPG, racing games, and the occasional fighter game. So I'll probably give more attention to those; but feel free to suggest any kind.

Well we would need to know what games you currently have of those which ones you really liked or hated.

I suggest you put that money towards a PS2 and live in the now. The PS1 is done and so are the games so sell it and get a PS2 with GTA3 but if you really must use the PS1 at least get GTA2

I assume you've heard of all the really big games for the PlayStation, such as Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid (check out the separate VR Missions if you haven't already), Final Fantasy, Tony Hawk, Crash, and to a lesser extent Spyro (just thought I should mention it), so I'll try to recommend some you might not have heard of:

    Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012
Racing and fighting...how about racing while fighting? Ignoring "Twisted Metal: Black", many will say the greatest car combat game is "Twisted Metal 2", which is why I feel the need to bring your attention over to an extremely underrated game called "Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012". Made by the same people that brought you the first two Twisted Metal games, this is without a doubt the best car combat game released for the last generation of consoles. I strongly suggest you give it a try.

    Ape Escape
It's the only game I know of that provides you with hours of fun chasing down apes and catching them in a butterfly net. Need I say more?

    Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time
Yes, there are better platform games out there, such as the above mentioned Crash, Spyro, and Ape Escape, but this game needs to be mentioned by someone. It's the only game I've ever played that has managed to capture the zaniness of the Looney Tunes, and I never once felt frustrated or bored. Since this is Toon Zone, I felt I should mention this game which is often overlooked.

    Crash Team Racing
Yes, it does borrow more than a little from the Mario Kart series, but it should be given credit for taking something that works and making it even better.

    Driver
I haven't played "Driver 2", so you may want to consider looking into the sequel before getting "Driver", but I can safely recommend this game as having one of the highest replay values of any game on the system. No chase is ever the same and it features a variety of gameplay modes that should keep you entertained for hours on end without getting bored.

    Spider-Man
If you haven't played this game you've been deprived. You don't even have to like Spider-Man to know that this game deserves a space in everyone’s gaming library.

    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Called the greatest Castlevania game by most, I have to say that if you enjoy side scrolling games at all you should at least give this game a try. It's huge and should provide days of fun before you even come close to finding every nook and cranny in the castle.

Of course, that PS2 does sound pretty tempting...
(especially since it can play PS1 games and by summer the price should be lower)

I agree, great fun - and cheap too. The suicide missions in San Fran are excellent fun - and the extravagant physics mean you and your mates will be crying with laughter for hours.

    Final Fantasy 7

A must. A definate. You - go - get - it - now. Best story, best action, best music, non-linear gameplay. Perfect. FF8 and FF9 are worth a look too, but this is the best. So what if it was hyped? It is a crime not to play it.

    Ergheiz
Squaresoft mix of RPG and beat 'em up. FF7 characters included. Actually the RPG is great fun and harks back to the simplicity of the 8-bit console. Hard to fight but worth it. The beech games also included are bizarre.

Star Wars - Masters Of Teras Kasi

Not fantastic, but a LOT of fun. Beating the hell out of Vader with a stormtrooper is a plus for anyone's life experiences. Hard to locate, but rewarding.

    Wing Commander 4

Easy game, but it has Hamill! The guy from Twin Peaks! The police sarge from Robocop! The pilot guy from Babylon 5 who dies at the end of series 2 (Keiffer I believe!) and of course, Malcom Macdowell, John Rhys Davies and ..... (Biff) Thomas Wilson.
Isn't it worth it for them?!

Wild Arms - An RPG sort of part Legend of Zelda part FF. Really difficult and addictive.

Any of the Deception games by Tecmo - you basically run aroud castles, booby-trapping the joint and killing innocent, and some not-so-innocent, people that come by.

Driver - you're a wheel-man for the mob, and you have all these assignments to complete w/in a certain time-limit w/out getting nailed by the police.

Tekken 2 - the best fighting game ever!

It was a good game, I just couldn't get the hang of the controls. And to SLIPKNOT: I liked MK Trilogy the best.

When I moved to college, I brought three games with me: Rogue Trip, Driver, and Crash Team Racing. As far as I'm concerned, I'll never need another game.

Yeah that was a PS1 game wasn't it? It's my favorite too. I liked it since it had every character in it. The PS1 game was better than 64 since you could play as the bosses. I own it for both systems.

MK Trilogy does have everything a Mortal Kombat fan could want, except for two problems:
    1. The load times were freaking long!
    2. The Ultimate Kombat Kode has, apparently, never been found. (not really a problem, but kind of makes the game incomplete)

That's why I wasn't thinking PS1 with this game, I always play the 64 version. It has no load time.

...Ah, (sigh), there are even more games than this worth owning, but I'm tired so I'll stop the list with the best of the best.

Also keep in mind that all the games that have the green packaging which says "Greatest Hits" are labeled so for a reason --- those games were PS1 best sellers, and are definitely worth checking out!

    Greatest Hits List

OK, this page from IGN lists all 113 PS1 games that are currently "Greatest Hits" games:

    http://psx.ign.com/articles/091/091211p1.html

"Singin' Stray Cat", I hope you enjoy your Playstation! Personally, I think you should make your first PS1 game Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, or Final Fantasy IX, since you said you love RPGs.

I haven't played a whole lot of games on the PS1 (I only have one, count it, one game ). I have, however, played and enjoyed the following:

Star Ocean EX - Really nice RPG game! Beautifully lush graphics!

Twisted Metal 2 or 3 (can't remember) - What better to blow other cars and people up to get out all that frustration? Really addictive!

Jet Moto 2 - Really fun, and very addictive, I swear! Ended up playing this over and over for hours!
