"Marvel Super Heroes/MSH: War Of The Gems" Classic Video Game (Talkback)

    Like This Thread!
In light of the review for Maximum Carnage, I think a discussion for these games would be nice. This game furthered my interest in Marvel Comics (Aside from the cartoons)

Note: The arcade version was also ported to Sega Saturn and Playstation.

Synopsis: There are six Infinity Gems (Time, Space, Soul, Power, Reality and Mind). Whoever obtains all six will have unlimited power. Who will gain all six gems first?

Yeah, it's nice once in a while to delve in to the classics that've been going unnoticed, ever since the big systems (namely Microsoft's Xbox).

I have to admit though that I wasn't a big MARVEL fan as I'm a Square Enix. This was until like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, X-MEN: LEGENDS 1 & 2 came along.

War of the Gems was nothing more than X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse with some additional Marvel characters grafted in. It's true, I owned XM:MA and most of WotG's sprites, obstacles and stages were exactly the same as the former. It was just a cheap knockoff game made to cash in on the success of the Marvel Super Heroes arcade game by Capcom, and I felt sorry for any poor uninformed parents who bought this game for their kids thinking that they were getting the Marvel Super Heroes fighting game, which would have been crap on the SNES.

As for Marvel Super Heroes, it was a decent fighter. I would have liked to have gotten a wider variety of characters to play as (I get tired of just getting Cap. America, Spider-Man, Hulk and Wolverine all the time), but it was a solid title in its' day. I'm really sorry we couldn't have gotten a good DC game like this (Justice League Task Force was mediocre at best), as I've always been more into DC than Marvel.

This game was about as irritating as Arcade's Revenge.

War of the Gems was garbage, but Marvel Super Heroes was a decidedly improved version of Children of the Atom. Dr. Doom and Thanos were nowhere near as cheap as Magneto.

After Marvel Super Heroes, Capcom gave us the Versus series, but I think that MSH deserved a proper sequel, with some new DC heroes and villains and some new Gem powers.

Of course, what I would really like is a DC vs Marvel game. too bad that will never happen.

No I knew what I was getting. Read about it in Nintendo Power. It was my only choice as I was a Nintendo person.

You guys can comment on the first MSH, just to remind you.

I enjoyed the SNES and Arcade games quite a bit. The SNES game was a fun sidescroller that was tough at times but was fun nonetheless. The arcade was simply awesome. I had the Playstation port of the game and I can't remember how many hours I spent playing that game. Good memories.

I loved Mutant Apocalypse so I liked War of the Gems. I don't think I ever finished it, though. The fighter was pretty good, but was eventually eclipsed by later efforts like the almighty Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

I remember War of the Gems.

It was an okay game, but nothing too impressive by any means. But it was a fun game to play for a little bit every now and then.

You make it sound like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 wouldn't be on XBLA or PSN if Capcom still had a deal with Marvel.

War of the Gems was just a crapper version of Mutant Apocalypse. The fighting game was one of the first games that fully justified my purchase of a Playstation. I loved Spider-man's stage especially, I would sometimes set the game on 2 player and let both fighters sit there, just so the elevator could get to the top and show off that view of Manhattan.

Yeah, I had the misfortune of playing this after I'd gotten a good taste of Marvel vs. Street Fighter, and it's hard to go backwards. But still a pretty neat game, nonetheless.

While it may not have been the arcade game, it was still a decent platformer. I especially enjoyed the use of the Avengers training stage as it allowed you to fit a few of the games different villains. I do have some gripes though:

    - Wolverine and Spider-Man should have been closer in size to Cap and Iron Man. Same with Daredevil's Doppelganger.

    - Should have had Magneto and Juggernaut to as bosses (Aquarium and Egypt respectively) as opposed to the Doppelgangers if only to give it more of the Marvel Universe feel.
