Need help with name of a PS1 game

Way back when there was only like the N64 and Playstation I remember playing the demo of this game that I can't remember after all this time at a local K-mart and it's been bugging me for awhile. I'm not 100% sure it was a playstation but it most likely is.....what I'm describing is totally from memory so I can't really do better then this

I remeber that you were this kid with a strange red weapon thing and you could change into animals you defeated, if I remember correctly there was an onion plant thing and a wolf thing. I remeber he was trying to save a girl at one point in the demo hiding behind a rock and he used the onion form to get closer to the capturers.

Unfortunatly that's all I can think of, I have been wanting to play this game for awhile I just can't seem to figure out even its name....

Any help in identifying the PS game would greatly contribue to my mental sanity since I've been trying to find the game for A LONG time now

All I remember was that the demo was fun too play but I could never actually find the game afterwards because I couldn't remember the name.
