    videogame skill level

    Like This Thread!
i think that a person's skill level can't be based on how well they do against the cpu. this holds true more, imo, in fighting games.
example: my friends know me as a streetfighter champ. i fought those who challenged me. i conquered them.
later, i met a dhalsim player who claimed to be able to beat the cpu on difficulty 8 with all perfects. we battled, with me as ken. i lost the first round, but won the next two, winning the match.
I hate myself and I want to die.

Yeah, I'd say that domination over humans is what counts. Try playing a computer on SSBM at level 9. One on One they aren't very tough, and the only reason a good player will ever lose to the CPU is if the CPU has an advantage, and the AI is a *****. They love to swarm you and only you, even if it's a free for all.

Beating the computer means very little. I once had a game where I could set it to easy (which makes it hard) or set it to hard (which makes it easy). That, of course, would depend on other settings.

In most situations, I still think beating another person shows more experience.

Hi. Nightwing: Marvel vs Capcom (2) player extraordinare. How ya doin? lol

Beating the computer means nothing but additional training for the field. The computer goes much easier on you than you might imagine, despite the "difficulty level." The computer could easily wrech any player in a very short amount of time.

yeah... beating people is what matters...

    ALL scrubs must die!!!!!

I hate it when I can beat someone 54 times in a row (at MVC2) (you can tell that I actually DID beat someone 54 times) and then they beat me once and they say that they're better than me... and then won't challenge me again... Feh.

CPU defeats only count when you're first familiarizing yourself with a game. Human competition is the only true way of determining greatness!

Try going up against The Covenant on Legendary in Halo, and see how stupid humans really are in your next multiplayer game.
Or, I'll put it this way:
I threw a grenade at a Grunt once (on legendary), and that little bastich picked it up and threw it back at me. This only happened once, so maybe it's a glitch. But if it isn't, the AI in Halo is a lot smarter than a LOT of self-proclaimed "FPS Master" people I know.

Depends on the game in reality, for instance if I used a game like Dead or Alive 2 which is basically built around hte fact that you need to perfect your skill against other people then the A.I doesn't really count (well it does because games really should have better A.I.)

However playing a game like Metal Gear Solid really is all about playing against the computer because they're built to be solitary adventures.

I think that since the AI is the same for everyone. It does show how good you are in most cases, but Im sure other games are different.

I've seen the CPU make very stupid mistakes while playing me, most people would of been able to avoid. So beating the CPU means very little to me, fighting human's, and beating them, is so much better.

Plus, you can brag about how good you are after you win.

A CPU always has a limited number of attacks, even if it can come up with a new attack by taking two attacks and merging them, a human however is unpredictable and can always come up with newer attacks or a better stratedgy, a CPU's stratedgy is programmed in while a human can go through several ones unpredictably.

I suck at fighting games, then! :P

The CPU is the main way I practice my Cody-playing skills on Street Fighter Alpha 3, so I'll die in the real world...

.... I'm in the camp that the CPU sucks, though. I wish I could meet some humans to play against. It'd be nice to have some real challenges.

I don't think the computer is a true test of your skill. You can play Mortal Kombat 4 on VERY HARD, and I guarantee you, you are NOT going to win.

And there is no why a human can break out 80 different combos in 2 minutes. It's impossible.

My brother and I played Melee today. 4 matches total (each 5min matches), and we tied. We're basically equal when it comes to that game...

Games all have different levels of difficulty, so if you're looking to determine raw skill level, yup, I'd say human vs. human is the way to go.

Not that I'm really any decent at fighting games...
