So... I'd have to buy an additional add-on just to play my older game saves? Or will this be included?![]()
Apparently it just requires the assitance of an adaptor device, and then you copy the data itself
this is certainly good, considering the whole fiasco of the 360 and it's quasi backwards compatibility was rather frustraiting. It looks like it will be the only system with a BC issue then, with the PS3 and Wii in theory should be working.

So... I'd essentially need to purchase a modern version of a DexDrive to have old saves work.
Wow. I like the Wii's concept of "for GCN compatability, we've dedicated a side of the machine".

All for the delicious price of $600!
What about old accessories? Joysticks, Retrocons, decent controllers, etc. Are they doing anything like a "Bluetooth Adapter For PSone/2 Input"?

It's really no different concept-wise than the other attachments like the GBA Player and such if it turns out the way it's expected for the PS3. And in all honestly it sounds more reliable than the 360's backwards compatibility, with the iffy attitude Microsoft is giving it.Originally Posted by Chad Lee
Also older accessories are more or less a wait and see, the PS1 accessories worked with the PS2(aside from some 3rd party controllers), the controller ports may be different for the PS3, but being that the default PS3 controller isn't all that different layout-wise it wouldn't be all that of a problem.
I think Tekken 6 may have even a SE Joystick controller so that covers fighting games which are the majority of games that requires a different controller, allthough it's just rumored at this point

Well, no. The GBA player allowed you to play a different line of system's games on your tv. Now if the GBA player was instead an N64 player, I might see your point.Originally Posted by Artimus Gigan

The news isn't exactly as big as it sounds. Sony must allow PSX/PS2 saves to be used for backward compatibility, so virtual cards on the hard drive is the cheapest way (in fact, I didn't understand why they wouldn't allow you to keep 15 usable PSX saves on the PS2 memory card). If they announce a device to move saves from the cards, then they're actually doing something beyond what's absolutely necessary. Note that the article says "Currently it's possible to move original Xbox game saves to an Xbox 360 with the aid of third-party peripherals," so they'd just be making the adapter instead of third-parties.
As for controllers, I can't see them making them playable. The PS3 controller is almost identical to the older ones, except they've removed rumbling (which they'd have to disable on older controllers anyway due to the legal dispute) and added a tilt function (which doesn't affect old games). Other than saving customers money, there's no reason to allow the use of old controllers. I'm guessing that any special controllers required for certain games (e.g., dance pad) won't be much of a concern either, as most people won't be effected (similar to how Nintendo dropped the link cable port for GBA games on NDS).
I do hope that Nintendo takes note of the virtual memory cards, as I'd like that as an option for GCN games on Wii. It's not required since Wii will have GCN ports, but I'd still like to be able to move my saves if I want.
