It's time to play...."Will You Sell It?"

    Like This Thread!
There's a new generation of consoles on the horizon, as everybody here knows. A generation that can not only play the new games coming for them, but every game from their past. With backwards compatibility, the temptation to E-Bay or trade your old machine for credit will be great. But is it a good idea? Here's my take on it all.....

PS2: First off, no matter what I sold the PS2 for, it would barely make a dent in the PS3's gargantuan price and wouldn't help much. So let's pretend it would.
    I still probably wouldn't sell.

I never sold my PS1. It's in its gray box right now, waiting for whenever I need to play a PS1 game that won't work on the PS2. This is why. Sony came out with a small list of incompatible games when the PS2 was released, and I already had three of them.
It's likely to happen again with the PS2. I own a lot of weird niche titles for this machine and Sony could care less whether those will work.

Gamecube: I have better faith in Nintendo's technology. I've sold all my previous Game Boys whenever newer models came out, all the way up to the GBA SP, and I've never had a compatibility problem. I kept the SP when the DS arrived, though, because the ability to play Tetris circa 1989 ended there.
But I doubt I'll be selling the Cube. Why? I have one reason: the Game Boy Player. It plays all my Game Boy games in big-screen size, from original through Advance, and I can't use it without a Gamecube. This is the only thing holding me back.
I wish Nintendo would come out with a Wiimote add-on that the Game Boy Player could attach to, or something....then I'd have a reason to barter the near-useless Cube away.

X-Box: This one's easy, since I never had an original Box to begin with. If I did, though, I think you know what my answer would be. Microsoft's list of incompatible games is a lot lot longer than Sony's, and an X-Box still holds some value because of it.

    ...

My PStwo? No. I have no plans to buy a PS3 any time soon, and it's not guaranteed to be as compatible (problems A and B? No use of the memory cards and controllers from the past).

My XBox? Um... don't have one. Actually tracking one down, if it's a deal, to play the XBox games I actually have (don't laugh, but I have a shelf of games for a console I don't have), until they're playable on the 360. Either way, an original XBox, via some reworking, would be the console I take to campus.

My Gamecube? Now here's a quandry. I have two black GCNs (one won in that Planet Gamecube contest a few months back). One is definitely for sale, and that's my non-progressive-scan-outputting, mint in box one. The other is problematic. It's the original model, but I don't USE that output. BUT... the Wii has not shown support for the Gameboy Player... which I never use... AND... I like to hold on to systems, or at least recollect them later.

My PSP? It's been sitting in trunk for the better of two months, awaiting selling for a Neo Geo. Massive upgrade I won't regret at all.

Gameboy Advance SP? Hell no. It's the NES edition.

Gameboy Micro? Been trying to sell it to grab the Famicom edition.

Nintendo DS? I'm on my second (I sold the first to get this Blue one), and I'll sell it to get the Lite. I have buyers lined up who want the system for a steal.

    Sell my games?

    No, never

I have well over 100 PS2 games and that's a good chunk of games that are on a workable system. I still have both versions of the PS1 even though the PS2 is Backwards compatable, Gamestop gives nothing for trade ins and it's too much of a hassel to sell, so newer versions stay with the old for all consoles that I have, they're worth more in my collection.

My Gamecube even though I have around 30+ games for it , that's a decent library, I've got all the good exclusives like both Metroid Primes, Wind Waker, Resident Evil Zero and the Resident 1 remake as well as the SE of 4. And both Zelda Collector's discs, as well as all the good RPGs for the System like Tales of Symphonia and Fire Emblem.

X-Box, stores have sales for XB games so I'm picking up the few that I missed, so I'm still buying games for it.

Handhelds, I have drawers full of assorted handheld systems, games, and acessories, I havn't gotten rid of any ever. The DS and PSP seem to be taking over a giood portion though, lots of well made handheld games for those two systems, certainly better than the GBA in many instances. Allthough I still pick up some remaining GBA games that I still want from time to time.

The NES, Genesis, Dreamcast, 32X, and Odessy2 are stored away, and I don't wish to get rid of those

All in all I certainly do not wish to get rid of any portion of my videogame collection, they all have their charms and reasons to stay. My parents do bug me from time to time about the few hundred games that I have. I do need a new storrage unti though, my room has gotten to be a bit of mess because the cases overflow the racks and they end up in piles.

Let's see, currently adorning my game shelf:

Dreamcast: Duh, if I haven't sold it by now, it's not going to happen. Short of something extremely unlikely like Sega and Nintendo announcing that the Rev will play DC games, that is.

PS2: The way things are shaping up, I won't be buying a PS3, so this is a keeper, too.

Gamecube: This is a toughie, for the same reason many people have mentioned-- the Gameboy Player. Personally, I don't think it's a matter of IF Nintendo will release an equivalent accessory for the Rev, but WHEN. Given their emphasis on making the Rev the ultimate retro console, I'm kind of surprised that it doesn't include such functionality out of the box, but whatever. When the Rev Gameboy Player inevitably shows up, the old reliable silver cube goes out the door, but until then, I GOTS to be able to play my portable games on the big TV.

...Ironically, I'd probably have bought a 360 by now if it's backwards compatibility were up to snuff; I never had an Xbox and would like to catch up on its back catalogue. There are just too many games I'd want that aren't on the compatible list, though. I suppose I could just get an Xbox for pretty cheap at this point, but I'm sure eventually enough games will be added to the 360's backwards-compatible lineup that it will be a worthy purchase, so I'm waiting on that.

Gamecube: Wii is backwards compat including the controllers, so the money selling it will go towards the Wii.

My brother and I will be selling our GCN's when the time comes. I'll throw in a few games I don't want anymore, as I can't see my library of 50+ GCN games getting all that much play after Wii's out.

I sold my old N64 and Sega Genesis stuff to get enough cash to buy my first car.

My PS2 broke, so I sold it off cheap to some people that wanted to fix it up.

Depending on wether or not my Wii can play my imported copy of Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4, I'll keep my GCN around if the Wii can't play it. I use a Freeloader disc on the GCN, but I don't know if Freeloader will work with the Wii, or if the Wii will even have region locks.

I have pretty much every major console, and I don't plan on selling any of them. Even the GameCube can still be put to use after I get a Wii (maybe it can go in my bedroom, alongside the N64 and Genesis).

Genesis, SNES, N64, GC- When Wii is out, chances are I'll be selling all 4, depending on if Virtual Console has every game I care about.

PS2- I'll be holding onto this for a while, considering it'll probably be well over a year before I even consider getting a PS3. But when the time comes, I'll most likely sell it.

    No.

I will end up sticking the PS2, and probably the Gamecube in a cupboard somewhere. (though only the Gc will be replaced by its next gen equlivent).

Xbox is still there, the 360 is on top of it.

I'm on a dilemma too, i wanted to create a thread similar to this,

I own every Nintendo console (including Virtual Boy) and every Gameboy (except Micro and DS), I also have a PS2,

the thing is (like i've probably stated a few times) i stopped playing games 5 years ago, i'm more of a rare occational gamer, for some reason i still like to keep up with the news and even buy new games that i rarely play....let alone even get half way through the game...

but i was such a huge gamer as a kid i'm not so sure i wan't to sell them, plus i do have a "history" of consoles, its not just not being a gamer anymore, I also have absolutely no space to have them and are going to be a hassle when i move, with the virtual console i'm very tempted to sell everything and get a wii, but the 'history' behind them and the fact that some niche titles might not be available makes me not want to.

I have a similar problem with the Gameboy, i have the "brick", 2 gameboy pockets, gameboy color, advance, and a SP, so i also have a "history" i'd never sell the SP but i'm more tempted to sell the others.

As for the PS2 i rarely ever played it i could sell it and just wait until a PS3 is affordable to be able to play my PS2 games, but i can also keep it...i don't know.

    any suggestions would help..

My advice is, when in doubt, don't sell. You can always change your mind and sell later, but once that beloved game is gone, it can be a major pain to get back.

My personal philosophy is only to sell a favorite console if I have a newer console with flawless backwards compatibility in my hands-- and by that I mean I've tested the game(s) I mean to play on it from start to finish.

As for the Virtual Console, it sounds like a wonderful way to catch up on games I missed from back in the day, but I'd be hesitant to sell off my old cartridges at this point. First, we still don't have an official list of what's going to be available for download. And second, flash memory may be a more stable storage medium than a hard drive, but it's not infallible. Files can get corrupted, or the console itself could (hard as it may be to believe about a Nintendo console) be fatally damaged.

    Better safe than sorry.

I haven't sold my games. Over the years, I've managed to build up a collection I'd rather hold on to than sell. The only thing I might sell is a double of a GBA (I have one, but so does my brother) that's been lying around.

    I don't sell systems.
    I don't sell games.

Well, in a certain instance, I'm short on cash, so I'm trading in a few DS games to afford DDR: Mario Mix.
I should put something here. I don't know what though.

    You wish on my Electroplankton.
I've been waiting on that one since day one.

I just need to find Trauma center. I seemed to have misplaced it.

Nope, I don't plan on selling any systems, ever. With the PS3, you don't get perfect backwards compatabiliy due to the lack of rumble, and for the Wii, you can't use the Game Boy Player. With the 360, BC isn't supported for everything, and isn't perfect for the games that do have it.
