There were multiple new Square title announcements today; I saw them at planetgamecube.com , but I'm sure they are up other places as well. Besides the previously announced Final Fantasy III for the DS and Final Fantasy IV for the GBA, Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI are also coming to the GBA.
Additonally, Square also has another DS game in the works... Mario Basketball. Considering all the other Mario sports titles, Basketball was inevitable, but I don't think anyone expected Square to develop it. Apparently, Square came to Nintendo with the idea.
As for the Final Fantasy's, FFIII appears to be somewhat of an overhaul as it will be a 3D remake of the original game, with the original folks who made FFIII involved. No word on whether FFV or FFVI will be altered at all from their SNES and/or Playstation versions, but regardless, it'll be nice to have these classics in handheld form. Personally, I'm especially interested to try out FFV since I really enjoyed IV and VI.
As Square ports its catalog over to the GBA, I wonder if Super Mario RPG or Chrono Trigger can be far behind?

And Square slowly moves back to Nintendo's court, as the potential for the PS3 to be successful seems to continuously weaken.
BTW, Square really likes odd ways of playing games, right? Crystal Chronicles? Can we expect some Final Fantasizing on Revolution (Not that I care, FFX turned me off from the Fantasies)?

Mario Basketball? We're running out of sports now. Eventually, they'll have to actually give us a REAL Mario game.

No offense to anyone that liked it or Square, but I'd rather they not develop revolution than make a sequel to that game. Bleh, it was just boring. Plus what would they do with the controller for that title, have you be the person who guides the light through the poisonous gas?Originally Posted by Blue Falcon
Come to think of it, maybe it could be a decent multiplayer, but that's all I could see if anything.
As for the Square portable titles, they sound fun. I already own FFV and FFVI on PS1, so I'll have to pass. FF3 could be pretty interesting since the original team are working on a 3D Version. Mario Basketball, hmm.. could be fun, the other Mario Sports titles have been. But yeah, I want real Mario titles Nintendo!!! I want an action title, heck I'd take another RPG (thankful for Mario and Luigi 2, Mario Bros. DS, and whatever Revolution Mario) but three titles of action aren't enough!Hmm... from the sports list, it looks like all Nintendo needs now are:
* Football (Retro Studios WAS going to make a Mario Football, but it got canned, maybe this is the time to do it!)
* Track Racing (we got the carts, but now we need a running Mario and friends, a la Sonic R)
* Skateboarding
* Snowboarding (I know, he's appearing in SSX)
* Boxing
* Prowrestling (Hmm... Maybe they could let THQ put him in to take on Hulk Hogan or HBK)
* Cricket
* Poker
Square, lovely Square, please make a Mario and Luigi 3 or consider a new Mario RPG for DS, pretty please?
This leads me to wonder, is Square doing anything for the PSP?

Skateboarding would be too much the same for it to work.
snowboarding would be too similar to mario kart
I just dont see the mario characters doing boxing
Prowrestling could happen hope not
Cricket and Poker would never happen,
the thing about Mario sports titles is they are fun so i don't mind them doing many more of them.
The team that made Mario + Luigi are good why give them that franchise to Square? have Square make a real SMRPG 2, and yes a re-release of the firstone would be great, but like i've mentioned Square would have to ask Nintendo as they own the rights to the game(and could release the game by themselves)
I personally not to excited for all those FF remakes, i already have the PSX remakes, why do i need to buy them portable again?
Final Fantasy V and VI for the GBA? Sweet.
A portable VI may be worth my while.
Because FFV might actually get a halfway decent translation this time?Originally Posted by sdp
The only thing they've announced for the Revolution is a sequel to Crystal Chronicles (lol). Whereas with the PS3 they're already working on FF13. Seems to me like a repeat of this gen, so I don't know where you're getting the idea that some GBA ports are "weakening" the PS3.Originally Posted by Knux Five
Well, they are making a Final Fantasy 7 spin-off that's supposed to be a traditional RPG. Some rumors are that it might actually be a FF7 remake, but this is the only thing they've announced though...Originally Posted by LordByronius

This announcement really isn't a suprise, people knew it was going to come sooner or later. There will have to be some graphical downgrades in order for it to fit I believe. Breath of Fire I and II had to be downgraded in order to be on GBA and I'm pretty sure that FFVI is a game that contains more data.
I wonder if they're going to "pretty up" FFIV-VI differently than the PSX version did from the SNES cart. I think the FMVs they added for Anthology will be long gone. The music quality was a bit lost on the PSX, so I'm hoping that's somewhat fixed. Wonder if they're going to do anything graphics related though.

What does that accomplish though? Whether they make it or not, you don't have to buy it. However, if they don't make it then the people who actually do want it can't buy it either. Having Square not develop for the Revolution doesn't benefit you, and only hurts those who would like it.Originally Posted by Steve Janes

How early in the GBA's life were the Breath of Fire games ported over? The GBA can pull some impressive stuff these days. Downgrades may not be necessary.Originally Posted by Captain Harlock
I just hate when companies have many remakes/ports with no ultimate version, the gba version will have new stuff but the psx version had cinemas but the wonderswan had blah bla, i'm a completist and i like having the best version and stuff like this irritates me ;/
i don't know how much but gba cartridges can hold way more data since BoF came out, they can probably fit both of them in 1 cartridge and have space now.
Personally... I'm still waiting for Mario Hockey. But Mario Basketball should be cool. I don't recall Square ever making a Basketball game though...
FF5 and 6 for GBA? SWEETNESS.
They should port FF7 to the DS while they're at it.
And Chrono Trigger is a must for the GBA.
