Endings that make you go What the--? (spoilers, obviously)

Finally beating Monkey Island II has kindled my interest in doing a thread about absurd endings. Some of the ones I can think of are 7th Guest (you're the little boy who snuck in) and Darius II (Proco and Tiat return home only to find it a desolate wasteland).

The ending to Tales of Symphonia left me with that feeling. They leave you with this promise of more things to come, but it feels so tacked on, like they ran out of tiem to do anything else.

I'll come up with my own later down, but I wanted to mention Monkey Island II's ending has been under scrutiny of its fans for a long time, and there is an interpretation that I personally find plausible, and very inventive. I can't find an essay or so on it just at the moment, but here's a summary:

    Spoiler:
The real story of MI1 and MI2, the only two directed by Ron Gilbert, is that of a very imaginitive child going through an amusement park called Big Whoop, and we saw things through his eyes. Evidence for it is in Guybrush's naive and childish dialogue, weird items like the T-shirts ("I found the treasure of Melee Island and all I got was this stupid T-shirt") and that of the E-Ticket, and the abundance of vending machines around. Of course, another interpretation is a literal one - LeChuck hypnotized him to keep him away, as also done in the later half of Curse of Monkey Island.

    Oh, found the article.

    http://www.scummbar.com/resources/ar...icle&article=2

After reading it, I felt the games and ending took on a whole new outlook that could be appreciated. However - the mystery of the origin of the rubber chicken with a pully in the middle might forever remain unknown to mankind.

And SMB2's ending (unless Advance changed it somewhat) wasn't too surprising, since they showed you at the beginning that Mario was called forth into the dream world. Or am I imagining that...

The ending to Super Putty on SNES. A robot shoots the magician villain dead (complete with Terminator-style vision for the robot), the hero blob gets married and has baby blobs, and a bomb rolls into the picture, followed by the words "THE END?"

And there was never a sequel.

Final Fantasy IX definitely goes in this category, I think. You beat the main character's gender-confused brother who has obviously been groomed to be the final boss throughout the entire game, and then some random demon thing that you've never heard of before pops up, quotes Yoda (and not good puppet ESB Yoda either, but bad CGI Episode I Yoda), and says that he's going to destroy the world to put an end to suffering. What the crap?

For that matter, if anyone besides me bothered to play all the way through Mystic Quest (hey, I was young and stupid), that ending was pretty random. "I'm the Dark King! I started a prophecy a thousand years ago, FOR NO RAISIN! Let's fight!"

@Weatherman: I disagree. I felt ToS ending was very nice and clearly explained. Unlike Baten Kaitos, which was just weird.

I think the weirdest was Dragon Spirit for the NES. After all,
    Spoiler:
if you play through the easy quest, you find out it was only a bedtime story. Of course, the game would make sense if you go the "hard path" (blue dragon, i think), then you really did save the day and all.

Jet Set/Grind Radio. The whole plot was very strange.

That's better than the original ending from Japan. In Japan's version, "Doki Doki Panic!" (not a Mario game), two children were sucked into a book and four people jump in to save them. The ending (from what I recall hearing) was simply that they got out of the book. Nothing special at all. Plus you had to beat the game with all four characters to see the whole thing. I'd rather "go WTF" than say "that's it!?"

Knights of the Old Republic 2. BY FAR.
    Where was the ending?!

    Metal Gear Solid 2.

These are by far the two crappiest game endings ever and unfortunately both are otherwise superb games.

Hah! So that's how Super Putty ended! I knew someone who had that weird, obscure, rare title. Super Putty itself was messed up.

Just use the level skip code to cut straight to the ending. The code is Start, R,A,L,L,Y. Select then allows you to skip stages.

Like I said, it just felt a little tacked on to me. Very few of the plot threads they rasied throughout 60 some hours of gaming were resolved in anyway, and it's not like they've anounced a sequell yet, so it all felt very slap dash to me.

Sorta "Oh crud, we're out of time, the animators need something to animate. Ummm....here, do this. It doesn't really do anything for the game, but it's something....right?"

I didn't get that feel at all from the game at all. So as not to derail the thread, we should probably continue this over PM.
