    Civ ///

    Like This Thread!
I got it. I only played it for a few hours but here is what I think of it so far.

1st you better clear some HD space this takes up 500megs on minimum install.

Second you better read the manual this isn't Civ ][ things have changed. Also even if you are a Civ ][ god you should start out on one of the 2 lowest diffiuclty setting till ya learn the ropes.

Barbarians are much better now they are a real threat even at the the Roaming level Barbarians no longer pop out of no where they have a camp thus to get rid of them you have to distroy their camp. Leaving you city undefended just so you can build a settler instead of a defence unit is now not such a good idea, in Civ 2 it was but now you really need at least one Warrior ASAP now you don't have to keep him in the city but use him scout around close to home I have been able to intersept Barbairains very early on this way.

Time passes slower so planning what to research is now more critical. Plus just becouse you say discover horse back riding doesn't mean you can build a horseman You need to find a Horse tile on the map (they will show up once you discover horse back riding) and build a road from one of your cities to it. Thus now you have to defeand these resorces and the road linking them. You can also setup a deal with another civ to supply them to you (if they have it) but it won't come cheap) Thus war in Civ /// is more open in one of the short game I played I captured the english supply of horses thus they couldn't make anymore horseman

Ok so now the bad news.
No multiplayer and the 2 world maps suck.

Besides that the game is cool and lives up the name Civilization

Cool, PF! But I've got a Mac, and am going to have to wait until March at least before I get my fix.

Until then I've been following the rise and development of the Corn Empire over on civfanatics.

What's with the funky numbers? Civ III, Civ II, simple as that. No need for the weird Civ /// or Civ ][

True. So what's wrong with the maps included in Civ3? Surely they can't be as screwed up as the maps that shipped with Civ 2.

Argh. But yeah, we should get some good player maps real soon. And I'm glad the random algorithm got fixed. I'm playing civfanatics Civ2 GOTM right now and yep, it's on a continent shaped like bugsplatter on a windshield.

This game will so be mine. So tell me do you get more leverage with diplomacy, IE conditions of surrendering or allowing your enemy to surrender in the war.

Well you can demand a city or gold or tech but the best is you can made trade deals for resorces under the dilpomat screen instead of having to waste time with caravans. So far as I can tell the AI seems to be more and more willing to have a uncondisional peace tready as you take their cities ie at first the english wanted 5 golds per turn then after I burned their capital to the ground they were willing to sign a peace tready in exchange they were going to give me gold

I only got to 100 AD but I have to restart I did something increadably stupid. See I was on this huge island I was on the east and Russia the west. Well I got along fine with them until I found out that the mountain range near their side was the only source of iron on the island so I had to build an out post there since the Russains didn't have it either. Well seems I got alittle to close for their comfort. They went from being buddies to raging mad. I thought nothing of it I had a huge army so I scoffed at Russia threats that was my mistake my army was on the other side of the island seaching trough the desart for a barbarin camp I sent my whole army that way since I though nothing of the russians at the time. So all I had was a defence unit in each city. Plus I had a army of workers building roads and making improvments. I still needed to crush the barbarains stong hold since they had horses now. Thus all I could do is change all the cities near the russains to pump out archers, the Russains where in on the other side of a mountain range and jungle made it hard for me to get troops close enough to actully attack any of their cities or infrastructure so I was thrusted into a defensive war with the Russians by my blunder.

Sounds like a good game, Psycho! Keep up your empire!

    I have a mac too...and I-WANT-TO-PLAY-CIV-3!!!! WAHHHHHH!!!!

Okay, I am calmer now...and Psycho Fox, is getting a lot of culture reletively easy? Being a peacenik, I love this idea, since military might is not my forte.

...and if the Civ3 manual is anything like Civ2's, then I'm up for a good read!

I kinda lost track of the Corn empire in Civfanatics. How is it going, Maxie?
Signature. A noun. It is, in internet terms, a series of words, phrases, and pictures at the end of every post used to make posts more fun to look at and show the user's uniqueness.

    ....I wish I had a decent one.

I had to abadnon and resatart see my statagies I devloped from playing Civ 2 don't work in Civ 3 mostly becouse of the Barbarians. They are no longer just a nuisance. See they have camps and can pump out militray units. And for some reason they can smell gold from a mile away. The richer you are the more the Barbarians throw at you to try and take it away. Thus I have to rethink my statagy towards defence. I have to take into account of have a standing army stong enough to wage war with Barbarians in a heart beat plus defend my self from the other civs (oh yes and got to war with them if I want to).

As I said above while you can use dimplomacy to keep peace with the other Civs the Barbarians are only after your gold and they are not nice about it. As for Culture yhea but it you gona have to dish out money for temples and junk.

From everything I've read, it doesn't sound like it. I get the impression the end game advances and units are basically like those in Civ and Civ2. Civfanatics.com is a good site to get a rundown on Civ3 features.

Like BB, I'm really keen to see how Culture works. But I do like the changes they made to resources and trade. It will make it much more real-world to see powers scrambling to control vital resources.

Oh, keep us updated on how it's going! We're getting the CornEmpire Chronicles over on civfanatics.com. I'd love to get newsflashes from you, too!

And speaking of the Corn Empire. He seems to be in a quagmire fighting the Germans. Apparently he made peace with them after taking a few of their cities, but they are very unhappy with him. His latest post has some eye-opening things to say about the new AI's fighting abilities:

Now maybe this was just a conidence but the French and the Germans had an alliance against me. That's fine. But we are at peace (The Germans I mean)

So the French drop a swordsman next to "Iron Curtin" One of my Iron Cities. Well...I mistook the Pink for English (Which I'm friendly to.) Well...opps, they took over my city!!! and took away my source of Iron (one of them)

The Germans on the other end of my empire had 6 archers sitting on my horse's and roads that connects West and East CornEmpire together. Well...THEY PILLAGED ALL THE ROADS!!! So I lost one of my horse resources too!!! Then obviously declared war on me.

Well...I was following them around with a few knights to make sure they didn't try anything funny. Well...they did!! So I picked one off but not before 4 of them attacked "West Side Hills" Luckly my pikeman and spearman were able to hold them off....just barely though....

Well I stared again and from what I can tell I got the whole land mass I stated on all to myself. I have found that horsemen are great for Barbarain patrol. Oh and I'm so luck I started on the South-East side of the land mass. and it is very green and fertile I could only fit 3 cities in there but I have 2 since I have one off in a mountain region for gold and another in the other mountain region for iron thus I can't squeeze a 3rd city into the lush green fields oh well the 2 cities are turning out people at a very high rate so I am colonizing the the land mass pretty fast.

Well as I said there doesn't seem to be anyone else on the land mass the rest of the it seems pretty hilly but ok for putting new cities in of course I haven't explored it all. Although I have recently seen a boarder in the water so there must be a land out there with someone on it. As soon as I get a Navy I'm going to explore that way. I have extra Iron and Horses plus fur comming out of my ***** due to my port city up in the tundra area. So I have alot to trade. (Oh and the fur also keeps my people happy) I need trade I'm losing 3 gold a turn since I turned the science way up to discover faster but I have a good solid reserve for now.

I hear on civfanatics that corruption under despotism is a huge drain, but that it's hard to get to monarchy quickly.

Well you can get Monarchy around 100 BC maybe earlyer if you really push it. In my game it is around 100 AD and I've just go it but I went out of my way to discover Writting and horse riding. Now that I meet Japan and trade maps so I see their map and China's since they are sharing a land mass I see they have more cities then me. I held off my push east, 10 or so turns before I meet Japan since I needed a army of new shinny swordmen to protect my settlers from the Barbarians. So now I'm have a settlment boom but after they are all settled that would only put me about par with the amount of cities they have but they have a bigger land mass then I do. I have yet to sign a trade deal with Japan since looking at their map I think it is in my best intrest to start a war and take a few of their cities near the channel seperating the 2 landmasses for my own security by controling those ports if they every launched a supprise attack I have some breathing space since right now there are just 2 close to my capital for comfert.
