Yup, I heard of that. Now I know that we're to expect SOME defects from any company, but this is ludicrous.
I chalk it up to two things... first, Microsoft hasn't had much experience with hardware, aside from some joysticks and other minor peripherals. Second, Microsoft doesn't usually have to make things good. They pretty much own the market with their monopoly, so why bother going the extra mile to make, say, Windows decent? Remember how often the Blue Screen of Death shows up? Microsoft is going to learn the hard way that, when they enter an arena with actual competition, quality is a virtue...
Microsoft has been botching a lot of things. On IGN, there's a brief mention of a HUGE, fold out four-page Xbox ad basically telling people to come play the Xbox stuff at the Tokyo Game Show. Unfortunately, the magazine that contained that ad hit the streets THE DAY OF TGS. D'oh!

You read it... you can't un-read it!
hehe. This proves how sucky they are. I mean even Commodore's (which was well knowen for cutting corners to the extreme) CD32 could boot up fine most of the time.
The EB near me had a busted xbox too on display
