Think we'll ever get back to the days of U.S toons being animated in the U.S?

Remember back in the 80's when studios had their animation done in local enviroments? Do you think we'll ever come back to those days, or is the cheap foreign work to good of a deal?

Cheap foreign work is too good of a deal. You know money is always the bottom line!

You are right it is about the saving but remeber that in the 80's some studio took advantage of cheap Canadain animation and in the earily 90's a few took advantage of even cheaper east european animation.

This reminds me of the "Making of" Simpons episode where they showed the animation studios in Korea with all of that sweatshop labor going on........

but i have to say its true that it is cheaper for them to take advantage of foreign animation companies

MTV's Spy Groove was animated in the US... But between wanting last minute control over the shows, as well as a H-B look, it worked out well. Except it didn't last long on tv.......

My personal favorite joke about foriegn animation was in the Clerks Animated Series, where the Korean animators put in all of that Japanese style animation at the end of the court room episode. You have to admit that Jay and Silent Bob getting a gander at Sailor Moon's goods was quite funny! (still amazing that one got by ABC!)

was shipped out, even then. I don't know how much of their own animation Nelvana and the other Canadian studios did, but the USA was definitely shipping out their stuff to Korea, etc. Look at The Real Ghostbusters. The syndicated episodes in particular were sent off to the cheapest bidder and it is sometimes very evident! Some of those episodes have really poor quality animation more of an anime look (especially the women). Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster and Dairy Farm of the Living Dead come to mind.

I can't see the complete animation process returning to the west. As has been said, it is just too expensive to produce. Most of the smaller western studios make their money by producing animated commercials.

It is possible to have the whole proccess in the west. A lot of old grunt shops in Canada have desided to do their own cartoons on top of being grunt shops like Studo B. See the only reason why sending animation out to be done cheap is becose the over head is spread over more people but if you are that shop then your overhead is already covered so you can do everything internally. The other thing is merchindizing look at Watership Down in the UK, merchindizing is where the real money is being made on the series and the actully licencing fees are nothing but loose change compaired to it thus with good merchindizing, better animation can be afforded. One of the biggest things that Canadain studios have done to keep people comming to them for their animation needs is by just getting a agreement for animating it for free in return for part of the action (piece of the pie) thus while more expensive for the studio in the long run very little cash is needed.

Hate to burst your bubble, but foriegn animation has been going on for a LONG time. I remember a few years ago seeing the credits to a Scooby Doo cartoon, made in 1970, and noticing that the animation was done by Wang.

There has been a tiny bit of American TV animation... Startoons, if I remember correctly, is based in the U.S., and they did some episodes of Animaniacs and Taz-Mania (even did the title sequence for that one). But, on the whole, it's cheaper for the studios to go foreign.
