Why the Earth and its moon are resting on Atlantis (okay maybe the toon world)

Let's think about it, most people like us are hoping for more sophisticated animation (you know less cuddly animals more maturity.) It seems that Disney itself is trying to make one of these "serious" cartoons. We've already seen Titan and The Iron giant fail, to attract large audiences at the box office (alot of this might have had to do with the fact that they didn't have singing creatures, or Disney's name, though Dreamworks hasn't done so bad Prince of Egypt for instance) so i'm thinking here. Backed by the Disney name and being tooted as one of their major summer releases (they've pretty much been releasing an animated feature once every summer, and one once every 2 winters) right? So here's the point of what I'm saying. If Atlantis succed's Disney (and perhaps other animation studios) will try to give us more serious animation. However, if this thing does not do that well at the box office, Disney will revert back to the formula that has been making them money for years (the little cute animals, and catchy musicals not that there is anything wrong with that) and even decades.

So let us cross our fingers and hope fellow Toonzoners, nay American animation fans.

Atlantis won't change things over night, not even it succeeds at the box office. It won't affect a change one way or another over night.

While Disney may go back to the same old formula, there will always be other studios out there who will make more adventurous animated features. And even if Atlantis does succeed, that doesn't mean Disney will never revisit the musical genre that made them so popular today. They know that stuff makes big bucks and they aren't going to abandon it all together.

The fate of the animation world isn't resting it's laurels on Atlantis, but a successful run in the theaters would certainly open the door for more mature movies in the future. On the other hand, if it fails, Disney is not in the position that Fox was where they would have to close their doors because this one didn't do what they had hoped.

In the end, I think Atlantis will prove to be fairly successful. Not Lion King successful, but certainly more successful than the Iron Giant and Titan AE ever were at the theater. And I think Disney will continue to do more adventurous animation, the question is only on what scale? It will depend on the numbers this new movie brings in.

I'd have to see Atlantis myself to have any kind of assumption of how it will do. But I've done some reading and I like the story and the characters so far. So we'll see!

But I'm afraid it's true. When you look up at that enormous sealed gate that blocks the animation we like from the public eye you can't help but be bitter. You just know it'll take forever to take down. And we've got a long long way to go.

Can anyone even picture it? What would it look/feel/be like to have works of animation with characters and plots as serious as the regular stream of movies and such be considered by the pop culture flow?? I have NO idea what it'd be like. I think it's because it's just that far away, so it's hard to see.

I guess if I try to look too far ahead, I'll get eye strain. Better just stop and wait for it to happen.

To tell you the truth, I could see primetime animated drama at least by the end of the decade (with the right executives of coarse) or even 5 years. I mean even Toonami edited and all is allowing cursing in some of their cartoons. I can see, nay taste the day when sophisticated animated epics grace the Big Screen, and the small screen (in primetime) I personally do think that alot is resting on Atlantis. Honestly, there must have been some serious teeth pulling t get this made (Of coarse considering the nature of some of Disney's other 90's movies I'd say the change had been coming.) The Lion King, Hunchback (very good), Mulan (cool fight scences) and Tarzan, (Gee someone got hung.)


Anyway, forgive me for placing high stakes on this movies performance, but I am convinced.

Yeah, I could see a prime time animated drama coming along in a few years, too. Especially with MTV, what they are trying to do with animation. They are definately trying to push the envelope, but for an animated drama to make it to network TV, I think more of it has to do with how these types of shows do on Toonami and MTV, but they can only be helped by movies like Titan AE and Atlantis.
