And now to add meaning to your lives my Final Fantasy review (spoilers)

BTW I'm being sarcastic, judging from the our you married thread you all are alot better off then me .

Anyway I was suppouse to see the movie with a freind of mine. But we couldn't coordinate anything so, she didn't come and I went alone. Anyway, I payed my 1 dollar for the 12 ocklock showing. I stayed in the arcade for a while before the movie started. Playing Crazy Taxi (which heck I already own anyway), Silent Scope 2, Star Wars, Virtru Tennis, and an obscure Sega game called Safari Jambo or something.

Anyway I go into the theatre and much to my suprise I found that only 3 people where there (including myself.) And I mean this is a room capable of holding over 200 people.

Before I start i must say that I haven't played any of the games. Alot of my freinds are fans of all things Squaresoft, but I'm not really. Haven't tried to much in the RPG genre.

Oh well on to the impressions.

Story: The story to me was enjoyable. The begining with a devistated New York really chilled me. At first I couldn't understand why Aki kept on shooting that thing into the sky, but then I realized that it was to give her light, and I guess so that she could see the spirits. Which brings me to my first big complaint about the thing. These things are spirits right, then how come they can be shot, and further more blown up? I mean if they're using the kind of tech that's used in Ghost Busters they should have explained the physics of it more (but they didn't even know they where ghosts in the first place so how does that work?) Maybe they where using the energy form that Dr. Sid discovered or something. Oh well. To tell you thr truth I thought the dialouge was kinda stiff and drawn out in some areas. Some of those lines and entire scenes could have had so much punch to them if they had just been executed in a diffrent way. The dream sequnces where interesting, but the one at the begining still came off to stiff for me, and the part in Tuscon was okay as well. I did really, really like the relationship between Captian Grey and Aki. They had a nice little tension between them at the start. Again I like the scene where she's searching for the 7th spirit and they're arguing about how she left him. Lot's of tension there, but again it could have been alot better executed. Anyway I actually started to cheer (not out loud mind you) when they started making out in the shuttle. Hek, I was even checking to see how fluid the animation was (Gaming fan in me LOL) needless to say it was seamen...I mean seemless. The revelation that Aki had the 8th spirit in her didn't suprise me that much. (some of the movie had been spoiled, but I would have caught on to the irony anyway.) Heck, I think alot of that sequance was just long and drawn out. I began to get bored. But the end with the captian dying, that really suprised me. It was good, I was expecting a cheesy cliche like, the earth has yielded your spirit, because of your bravery or something. Anyway again...nice ending.

    Charecters:

Aki Ross: The main charecter in the film. I don't know she seemed kind of plain to me. Typical stubborn heroine who pouts if she does not get her way. I would have liked to see the relationship between her and the Captian expanded on more. In fact they could have snipped a little time off of the huge climax, to expand on their relationship. What caused Aki to abandon him without even a goodbye. They could have built so much tension there.

Captian Grey: Here's an interesting charecter. Kinda cliche but heck I like him. I already went over what I wanted to see with him and Aki. Anyway what more to say, he was a pretty standard action hero dude.

Neil: This guy was great. Some of his lines where screwed up by bad pacing, but other than that he was hillarious. The part where he says, "I think we should escape to the nearest exit" was gold. I was kinda mad when he got ripped apart from the inside out. Anyway, I like those smart aleck charecters.

General: I was suprised at how good of a villan/antagonist he was. he had some good lines as well. And he was pretty gun happy about discharging the Zeus cannon. I like his line "So if I aim a gun at the Earth..."

Jane:Pretty typical again. I got the feeling that Neil was trying to come on to Jane.

The guy who's father died in Tuscon: I didn't even remember his name he was.

Dr. Sid He served as sort of a father figure for Aki. I like his line "It is not a fairy tale it is true." I would have put it in a diffrent place though.

Graphics: Not enough can be said about the visuals. They where incredible, so much detail in the faces...it's was just amazing. Very subtle things in their facial expressions, where picked up on with ease I didn't think was possible a few years ago. The effects with the explosions where awesome as well, I swear there where parts in the move where I couldn't tell that it was animated. Yeah it was kinda stiff sometimes, but man it still looked good.

    Overall: 8/10.

I liked this moive alot more then I thought it would. But there was so much untapped potential here with what the could've done. That is all.

That's EXACTLY how I felt at the end of the movie. So much untapped potential. I wanted to hear more about the spirits (Maybe I missed the explanation though), why certain special living things had them, i wanted to hear about Gaia, I wanted to hear how they were able to hurt them.

And the General character was exactly the type of guy that I'd like to pull out of the screen and bash his head with a hammer. What an idiot! And I understood that the "wife and kids" bit was supposed to give him depth and make him more sympathetic...but it just seemed to be thrown in randomly.

Kinda off beat, but you'd be suprised how many grandparents/parents brough their kids to see this movie. I kinda laughed to myself, people are so clueless. It's PG 13 for a reason.

I felt pretty much the same way. Someone could have spent a couple of days on the script working out some problems and it could have been a great story. There was a lot of potential with the ghosts from another planet thing. but they just wasted it.

And you've gotta give them some points for letting her lover die, but it kinda seemed like a useless death. so that pretty much negates any points it would get for that.
