Didn't rewatch this one, but I did watch it when it debuted on Fox, erm, a zillion years ago by now...

Favorite line (and one of the all-time favorite Simpsons lines):

MARGE: YOu are *not* getting a tattoo for Christmas.

HOMER: Yeah, if you want one, you'll have to pay for it out of your own allowance...

    :-p

Marge only had the tattoo removed because she was depending on Homer's christmas bonus to make up for the money she had to pay for the removal. If she'd known Homer's bonus wasn't coming, she probably would have waited until after the holidays to have it removed.

I caught the last few minutes of this when it aired. Having never watched a classic Simpsons episode, I was shocked at how mellow Homer's voice sounded. For those of you who are knowledgable about the show's history, how long was his voice like this before it morphed into the much dumber-sounding one Dan Castellanata uses now?

I'm sure she still is (rimshot)

Castellaneta changed Homer's voice with the second season, stating (IIRC) the newer voice allowing Homer to be more expressive, etc. (The first season was shooting for an imitation of actor Walter Mattheau's voice.)
