Crouching Tiger, Hidden Cartoon?

Well, this is a weird coincedence given the BATTLEFEILD: EARTH news I reported, and the fact the the CTHD DVD is being released on Tuesday. Well, her eit is, from http://www.yahoo.com

Martial arts sensation ``Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'' will become a television cartoon, if a Chinese animation studio finds a home for it.

Taipei-based SMEC Media and Entertainment has acquired the rights to produce an animated series adapted from Wang Du-Lu's ``Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'' book series on which the Sony Classics movie of the same name was based. SMEC's deal with Vista Publishing Group also gives the company rights to produce an animated movie and home video.

SMEC is now shopping the series around Hollywood.

``The source material is a gold mine of fantastic stories and characters,'' said Alexis Wallrich, who runs SMEC's U.S. offices in Pasadena. ``It's a starting point from which we'll create an engaging and entertaining new world of imagination and animation, while remaining true to the spirit of the original.''

With 300 employees worldwide, SMEC is an integrated multimedia company involved in game software development, publishing, distribution, animated programming on the Web and animation production services.

Director Ang Lee's ``Crouching Tiger'' feature won four Academy Awards in March, including foreign-language film.

What's next? TRAFFIC: THE ANIMATED SERIES? THE ANIMATED ADVENTURES OF ERIN BROKOVICH? Sheesh!

I think this would make a GREAT animated series! The only thing I fear is that it might be too much for American TV so we will get a typically sanitized version, but if they put this series uncut on DVD, I will be delighted.

i don't think the action will be as good. it's like jackie chan, he has some funny/cool moves, but they don't translate well into a cartoon.

these action sequences CAN be good in animated movies! And they don't have to copy the action sequences from the movies EXACTLY, as they can play with more liberties with it being an animated show.

I thought the action sequences in CTHD were a little anime inspired.

I don't think it would work under the current animation trend of stylized artwork. CTHD seems to me should benefit from a somewhat thin-lined, flowery drawing style. Hard-edged, superhero linework like you see in most action toons on TV would not look appropriate for this show. Maybe if they adopted a similar art style to Mulan (minus the cute touches) it would work, but if it resembles any of the action cartoons currently on TV, I probably would not like it.

Not being familiar with the names of the animation studios interested here, I can't say about their reputation. But it would have to be FAR different from what's currently on Saturday mornings to click with me.

Speaking of which, I'd prefer it if they hired Yo****aka Amano (who lives in New York) to do the character designs. You know Amano. He's illustrated and done designs for a Sandman book, a few Michael Moorcock novel covers, and, of course, Final Fantasy I-VI, and IX.

Urgh. The censoring program needs to be more customized. Maybe "sh**" written by itself should be censored, but if a person's name contains any 'bad' word inside its spelling, it should be left alone.

In one post, I typed the word ar****ts. Everything after ar was asterixed out. I edited it and then it was fine. I don't want to get in trouble for posting any naughty words, but do you suppose it was the three letters following ar that got asterixed? If so, how about titilation? I was really curious as to why it would put asterix in it the first time, but let me edit it and it would display ok? Oh well.

Anyways, back on topic. I think the only way a show like this could work would be if it is anime. An dnot some anime rip off like B:E is gonna be. I mean something like the crew behind Akira, TMS, someone handles it. If they get the right crew, then we'd havea beautiful show.
