That's true, but that symbolism has been ingrained into our minds for years, now. I wonder when it was first used and why. It always looks like the eyes have been stitched shut or something - but does that make a lick of sense?

It's not something restricted to death, I've seen it happen with characters being unconscious or passed out.
A variation of this gimmick is one big "X" that covers the area of both eyes.
