Game Over Talkback (3-10)- (Meet The Smashenburns)

    Like This Thread!
Let me start this talkback by saying, this is a really funny, great show. I hope UPN doesn't cancel it, but I have a funny feeling by the beginning of April it'll probably be gone. The show was pretty funny. I like Rip the best, he's a diferent kind of father, not dumb and stupid (Peter Griffin, Homer Simpson), but neurotic and overprotective of his family. Turbo reminds me a lot of Bender. Let's hope this show lasts long. What else does everyone have to say about "Game Over"?

Well, outside of Patrick Warburton, I don't think the show is all that great. The pet was annoying, and I REALLY wanted him to actually be eaten those... whatever the hell those things were at the end. He had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. At least Bender makes attempts to be funny.

The mom was kind of bland, only the Tomb Raider parodies saved her character.

The kids? The girl's the typical t.v. teenager and the boy looks to be very annoying, especially if he sticks to the whole hip hop thing.

The show needs more actual game spoofs, and maybe actually have the dad and kids literally mirror real game characters like the mother's take on Lara Croft.

I'll give the show another episode or two, but I don't think it'll last that long, maybe just long enough for it to warrant a DVD release of it's few episodes.

If it focuses on the parents, I'll be happy. The son is an idiot and the daughter is so typical it's not funny.

Did like the video game references though.

I give it 3 weeks before it's gone. Then again, somehow a show called "The Mullets" is still on, and with Adam West guest starring...

Yeah, I defintely thought "The Mullets" was cancelled, but maybe they're just airing leftover episodes.

I'll be pissed if they cancel this, they still keep those crappy "urban" comedies like "Eve" and "The Parkers", this show is actually something fresh, new, and different, and actually funny. I agree the kids are annoying, the parents are the parts that made me laugh. Turbo is so-so, there were some lines like "He had sex with the green one this morning, he did things, un-christian like things" LOL, that one had me laughing out loud, but he had some equally annoying parts.

Here's hoping it gets picked up for another season. And to those who want more video-game references, just wait a while, this is the first episode, they robably wanted you to get used to the characters.

I didn't even know the show existed in the first place.

Then again, I stopped watching UPN after Digimon left.

    It was alright.

If they stuck to more direct Game-ish stuff it would be better, the opening Race scene with the pan over the race-course felt so ReBoot-ish.

I liked the idea of the daugher's character(Complaining about the "perfect" women in games and anime), but she wans't pulled off very well. I don't even see her connection to Games.

I'd like to see some focus on the perpetually invaded by ninjas neigbors.

BTW: the more ads I saw for the Mullets, the less I wanted to see it

Yeah, teh ninja neighbors were pretty funny. The kind of character this show needs is a Stewie character, one kind of character that distingiushes themselves. But the shows still pretty funny.

BTW< I'll be handling the talkback threads for "Game Over", that is if it makes it past it's first season.

    ....

It was ok. They were smart by not putting this against American Idol or I would've definately not seen it. There were some good jokes and there were some that were bad. Turbo was annoying. The boy was a stupid whigger. The crash and abe cameos were cool.

I just don't see this series lasting long. It alienates people with the game jokes and it alienates the gamers with a lack of them.

I guess they left the butt shot scene in?

Yeah, they left the "butt" scene in, but it was quick and poorly blurred

    I thought it utterly sucked.

Only character that didn't come off moronic was the mother, who seemed to cater to a part of the audience who'd have the least amount of interest to tune in. And even she seemed to be over compensating for a small wang. The father was a dolt, and the kids were an insult to kids everywhere.

I saw all of maybe two inside gaming jokes and even they were forced and lame.

I did a pretentious review for my friends that I'll post here and try to edit some..

Game Over - "Meet the Smashenburns!"
    It sucked.

Because I'm down with the Power Rangers and dig on Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon one my think that I just like television that's bad and poorly made.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

As a reviewer I have to be able to see and understand many different genres and modes of storytelling. Be able to see where the jokes and fun are intentional, and not just a shortcoming.

The talking plushies in PGSM for example are a stroke of brilliance. No, they don't even come close to being as realistic as a CGI Fighting Or-roo-kai on LOTR, but that's exactally the point. Once upon a time when we were kids our Joes, Transformers and whatever else came alive in our hands and talked They waged wars for the sake of the universe and we loved every second of it.

Sometime around age 11 that kind of playing became more embarrassement to us than fun. A bit of our imagination collectively died.

That part of my mind, while not on active duty still works. Makes it fun to see rubber costumes knock down building, plastic swords cut down foes and watching plushie dolls drop that bit of needed information to resurrect a lost kingdom.

    That's how my mind works.

I see good where it is and understand the vision of creators despite the genre or demographic they aim for. It allows me to see when a chick flick is actually good or trite or a children show just a dumb distraction or an inspired piece to make the youngest child smile.

And it is with this open mind that I can say without a doubt that UPN's answer to "gamers" who want a family sitcom frelling sucks, and by frelling sucks I mean it bites.. HARD.

What you're suppose to see is what happens when you stop playing a game and characters go home to live out their "lives". Gaming on your screen is their day or night job.

But what you get is the parents who seem to appeal to a demographic too old to have gotten into video games and their kids who are completely and utterly obnoxious and insulting characatures of the young kids who do play video games.

So on the one hand it makes the people, who won't get the two inside jokes seen in this pilot episode, look good... the wife much more than the dolt husband(the one of the two more likely to play video games) and the demographic that would be interested in a show like this gets insulted 100% of the time, being represented by kids they wouldn't even like.

And they have a pet! An incredibly ugly blobby purple thing that is a homage to nothing in video games.

No joke hits home, the writing was forced as hell, and along with the directing you could tell the creator behind it didn't know **** about **** about video games!

This might be forgivable if this show wasn't billed as being a cartoon sitcom for gamers... no... it still wouldn't be forgivable. The computer animation was fairly decent, but with the money they spent on it, they could've gotten creators who had a clue what they were doing and some talent like Mainframe.

This is one of those "hip and capable" female characters I hate. She pulls completely all the action weight in the show while the male lead in the show is a clumsy dolt. I like my female heroes, but I don't like it when they're so "in your face" and over the top to the point where it seems like she's the one over compensating for a small wang.

So, any older males will be turned off(if they haven't already by the concept) by being represented by a dolt, the kids won't wanna watch cuz the people representing them are obnoxious and insulting brats, and the only one who gets to look good and intelligent is the demographic least likely to tune into the show... the household mother.

If ever you want to see a good computer animated show that knows what it's talking about and deals with video games.... track down some Reboot.

This show's title.... says it all.
Sorry if I was a little harsh....

I will say that I have watched more UPN this one night (me & my roommates are too lazy to change the channels) than I have any single day since UPN stopped showing Disney Afternoons.

Don't bother spending the Quarter.. Game over indeed.

When I first heard of Game Over, I was already thinking Reboot with a bit more of a attitude.. now that I've seen it.. It's not worth the quarter...

First off The Pluses here Include Patrick Warburton ( Kronk from Emperor's New Groove, Buzz Lightyear, Kim Possible's Steve Barkin, as Rip Smashenburn (Good name for the Family, btw, ..) being the patriarch of the Family and a NASCAR racer..(in fact he makes Speed Racer look Good..)

But then you throw in Lucy Liu as his Wife and E.G Daly (Cagney and Lacey?) as the son, and everyone else including Turbo.. and this game is indeed over before it begins...

Frankly the afforementioned "Censoring" really was nothing more then a Blurred behind here, and in fact Turbo looks really like a Mutant Freak here..he deserves the Toxic Waste Dump with his dumb one-liners.. and his silly looks. Grandpa Munster He's Not..

sure the idea Looks good on Paper but sadly this Game Over idea really doesn't start to grow on me yet.. in fact I'll have to catch the repeat again later this week..and see if a Second dose might improve me.

but sadly the dynamics here are more along the Lines of The Sims Unleashed or The Sims Go Totally Wild (The Smashenburns must be really Dysfunctional here!!)

The Fart jokes are okay for the adults but this Show Goes overboard way too quickly and sadly the dynamics between Warburton and Liu are there.. Sadly the rest of the Family makes me wonder if I should get out the Old Trusty Doom BFG9000 and Fry them!

Game Over is really over and I have to Agree with Tobias on this one.. Let's Hope they never get this one going onto DVD, cause if it goes, I'm going to get me some other video games..Like Flight Simulator 2004. from Microsoft.,

Total Vote here.. 2.4 out of 10.. Game Over unless they start changing the Dynamics here is about as wonderful as a Hard Drive crash.. or a Complete computer CPU Meltdown.

Give me Reboot anyday.. at least they did it with class...

Cryptozoology 101: The truth is real.

Friday nights on CN.. Action, Adventure, and.. Chilli Fries?

Kim Possible 2002-2007. Save the Cheerleader, Save the World. and for one brief Moment, we the fans, did save the world.

I missed it, but figured I wouldn't miss much since I have been laughing at this show since day one. Im sure I would get a chuckle out of the video game references, but other then that this show just looks horrible.

Not very good...but I'll still give it a couple more episodes.

The main reason I didn't like it was that I didn't like any of the characters. The parents were bland and the kids were just horrible...I don't know any kids that horrible. And the pet is a wannabe Bender. Hopefully it gets better next week.

I haven't seen this show. For some reason I was under the impression that it came out and died out over a year ago

Your opinions seem to be higher than everyone expected when the show was first talked about.

    What the hell WAS THAT?!

This felt like "Tripping the Rift" all OVER again! (and that was last week!) I'm gonna avoid CGI animated series for now on if this bullcrap continues. The Mullets have been on for five minutes, and is still funnier than "Game Over". If this does in fact make it to reruns on Adult Swim (c'mon, no way this thing's gonna last)...I will personally give up a half-hour of new cards and NOT watch. Yes, I hated this that much. And I usually give most stuff a fair chance (hell, I loved "The Oblongs" on AS original run!)...so I did this...but this was just not funny.

I smiled twice, laughed once. That's about it. I laughed much more watching the run of Kid Notorious. In fact, this makes me miss Kid Notorious (at least that show had some spark). I cannot WAIT for South Park to come on at 9:30, so I can wash out all the crap from this thing from my mind. Now, out of the primary bashing and into the in-depth bashing...

First of all, the series pitch is seriously stupid. If gamers really wanted to watch a video game characters play (regardless of the comedy), they'd be PLAYING VIDEO GAMES! And CGI animated comedies DO NOT WORK. Stick to 2D...3D for the kiddies.

Patrick Warburton usually cracks me up (usually the situation of him not making me laugh is unthinkable), but here he just fell flat. Lucy Liu as well. The teenage daughter is most cliched thing I've ever seen...but the son was okay, but a little weird as well.

Turbo! Turbo! What a...crappy character! Oh, yeah, somebody actually, finally tried to copy Futurama! I guess Bender fans have a thing to appreciate, their favorite TV character has finally been plagerized...and quite horribly I might say. Okay, the "un-christian" line was kinda funny (especially with Passion at the box office)...but after that he's just a sex-driven, crime-filled pooch. Replace pooch with robot.

    Exactly.

Oh, did I fail to mention that this was the unofficial first ep of the Simpsons minus the Christmas theme and in computer generated animation?

    Exactly.

And two words..."Home Movies" (god rest in peace, btw )

    Exactly.

And finally, near the end, my sister intrudes my bedroom asking "What are you watching?" I respond, "You know, I don't even know anymore"...

What do expect? This is UPN, a network that, in an SNL skit, gave a "maybe" to a sitcom about Frodo Baggins and Gollum living in an apartment in Denver, Colorado.
