Game Over - "Meet the Smashenburns!"

It sucked.
Because I'm down with the Power Rangers and dig on Pretty Guardian
Sailor Moon one my think that I just like television that's bad and poorly made.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
As a reviewer I have to be able to see and understand many different genres and modes of storytelling. Be able to see where the jokes and fun are intentional, and not just a shortcoming.
The talking plushies in PGSM for example are a stroke of brilliance. No, they don't even come close to being as realistic as a CGI Fighting Or-roo-kai on LOTR, but that's exactally the point. Once upon a time when we were kids our Joes,
Transformers and whatever else came alive in our hands and
talked They waged wars for the sake of the universe and we loved every second of it.
Sometime around age 11 that kind of playing became more embarrassement to us than fun. A bit of our imagination collectively died.
That part of my mind, while not on active duty still works. Makes it fun to see rubber costumes knock down building, plastic swords cut down foes and watching plushie dolls drop that bit of needed information to resurrect a lost kingdom.
That's how my mind works.
I see good where it is and understand the vision of creators despite the genre or demographic they aim for. It allows me to see when a chick flick is actually good or trite or a children show just a dumb distraction or an inspired piece to make the youngest child smile.
And it is with this open mind that I can say without a doubt that UPN's answer to "gamers" who want a family sitcom
frelling sucks, and by frelling sucks I mean it bites.. HARD.
What you're suppose to see is what happens when you stop playing a game and characters go home to live out their "lives". Gaming on your screen is their day or night job.
But what you get is the parents who seem to appeal to a demographic too old to have gotten into video games and their kids who are completely and utterly obnoxious and insulting characatures of the young kids who do play video games.
So on the one hand it makes the people, who won't get the
two inside jokes seen in this pilot episode, look good... the wife much more than the dolt husband(the one of the two more likely to play video games) and the demographic that
would be interested in a show like this gets insulted 100% of the time, being represented by kids they wouldn't even like.
And they have a pet! An incredibly ugly blobby purple thing that is a homage to
nothing in video games.
No joke hits home, the writing was forced as hell, and along with the directing you could tell the creator behind it didn't know **** about **** about video games!
This might be forgivable if this show wasn't billed as being a cartoon sitcom for gamers... no... it still wouldn't be forgivable. The computer
animation was fairly decent, but with the money they spent on it, they could've gotten creators who had a clue what they were doing and some talent like Mainframe.
This is one of those "hip and capable" female characters I hate. She pulls completely
all the action weight in the show while the male lead in the show is a clumsy dolt. I like my female heroes, but I don't like it when they're so "in your face" and over the top to the point where it seems like
she's the one over compensating for a small wang.
So, any older males will be turned off(if they haven't already by the concept) by being represented by a dolt, the kids won't wanna watch cuz the people representing them are obnoxious and insulting brats, and the only one who gets to look good and intelligent is the demographic least likely to tune into the show... the household mother.
If ever you want to see a good computer animated show that knows what it's talking about and deals with video games.... track down some Reboot.
This show's title.... says it all.
