Tenchi Muyo! GXP, Kiddy Grade, Detective Conan...

    Like This Thread!
Out of these three FUNimation-dubbed-so-possibly-Toonami series, which would you LIKE to see the most on Toonami? Remember, FUNimation would be handling any editing.

I'm personally split between Kiddy Grade and Tenchi Muyo! GXP. GXP is a throw back to some of the best days of Toonami, while Kiddy Grade seems to be a nice new action series. I'm sure that FUNimation will shop them to CN at least (I think they probably did Fruits Basket, but CN probably didn't want it or something), since the trio ARE action-adventure shows that would likely do well (Kiddy Grade), hopefully do well based on past success (GXP), or FUNimation has too many damn episodes to just release on DVD (Conan).

So, yeah, no poll, because this actually requires saying why. FUNimation would have more resources when coming to editing (the voice actors, script writers, what have you... although Pioneer did the same with Tenchi back in the day), and would likely sell both uncut and cut versions...

    GXP - Toonami
    Kiddy Grade - Adult Swim
    Conan - hold off

Conan's not for adults but it's just one of those things. The show is for family in Japan but some of the mysteries Conan solves involve gruesome murders and such. They find it acceptable, we don't. Until we DO, just get Conan on DVD and worry about it being on TV later.

It would make a good TV-PG show, but S&P's been so anal lately, I don't think we'll see that before 9 PM ever (and I mean consistently). Not to mention FUNimation probably wouldn't get the hint and would make it TV-Y7FV anyway.

Both Tenchi GXP and Kiddy Grade should go to Adult Swim IMO. They could be highlight shows for when ASA goes back to Saturdays.

Kiddy Grade is AS because its not really a younger demo show from what I've seen, and GXP should be AS because people who watched Tenchi then now watch AS (probably more than Toonami).

Conan is a bit trickier. I think it could do alright on Toonami, but it doesn't have much action. Maybe CN prime time or SVES. I'm sure FUNi WILL be themselves and release an edited verison for CN to put on the schedule by at least Fall... but will CN pick it up? Probably, because its popular in Japan but maybe not.

I'd like to see Tenchi just cuz I liked the previous ones--and I heard that there's an episode where the original characters make an appearance.
I wonder if they're going to still have their old voices in that cameo?

Whoah whoah whoah.....I would've pegged you as a 'GXP for Adult Swim person' especially since that's what the over all feeling here has been in regards to where the series could end up.

    And....I agree with you.

Tenchi GXP seems slightly more juvenile than Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Muyo was pretty juvenile to begin with. It may just be that I hate all things Tenchi but aside from the sexual-depraved dialogue and nudity I've never seen much adult in the Tenchi series. The only reason I don't like Tenchi Muyo on Toonami is because the digital bikini usage went over the top and some jokes got ruined by editting changes. But it still managed fine.

I am in agreeance with MW, but I still think that they could squeeze a way to get Conan on CN, whether it makes Toonami or not. Just be frank and explain that this is a show with murders and such, sort of like how YYH sort of handles death. Sure they would probably cut back on a lot of the blood and such, but if this is the only way to get the show on CN then this may be the only way to go for it. Then again we saw what happened to Kenshin so maybe we should wait and see....

Just curious... I'm really trying to follow up on Kiddy Grade, but why is everyone automatically saying it's for Adult Swim? I mean, there's skimpy suits, but really... what's adult about the plot?

(I'm not saying that it ISN'T adult, just from what I've seen [FUNimation's press, Kaiser's promo, etc] and read, it doesn't seem it)

And I'm kinda surprised everyone's thinking Tenchi Muyo! GXP would be good on Toonami. I mean, that's usually the first series that many say was "butchered" on Toonami outside of Kenshin, oddly enough (The show really wasn't adult, and a few jokes loss didn't kill the enjoyment, in my opinion)

Conan has too little action and like Matt said, the content in Japan is considered acceptable for families, in America it isn't. DVD only unless BS&P would allow a TV-PG show airing in primetime.

Kiddy Grade, I'm not sure about, I haven't heard enough to decide. GXP, either Toonami or DVD-only, it isn't adult. I don't know what the content is like though. If it would require more than 5 edits per episode, DVD only. But I've heard it's tamer than the prior Tenchi series.

GXP was a midnight series in Japan, and with good reason. Though it's not as fanservicey as the OVAs when it comes to straight up nudity, there are plenty of pretty girls running around with little on, and a good deal of intensionally awkward camera angles centered on certain parts of the female anatomy. In that sense, it's more fanservicey that the OVAs. It could run on Toonami, and it would be well recieved by the audience but the first episode would rack up atleast half a dozen or so edits, and like with the OVAs, a section of the humor would be muted. I'd almost say it's lock for Toonami, except Sean Atkins is (supposed) a huge Tenchi fanboy, so I'd guess he'd lobby for Adult Swim, so he wouldn't have to mess with something he liked.

Kiddy Grade has plenty of upskirt and panty shots, it features a 12-year-old who clearly enjoys fine wine and in the fifth episode, it has a shower scene with the same character. Again though, it's supposedly a fairly light-hearted show (I've not seen much of it,) so it might be best on Toonami. On the other hand, it might be nice to have some contrast to the number of very serious shows coming to AS.

Conan should probably be on DVD only, or a new TVPG block, but if Funi intends for it to be commercial title (IE: DBZ, YuYu) rather than a prestige title (Fruits Basket, Blue Gender,) it'll be on Toonami, and edited for Y7FV. They've got no qualm with heavy editing and redubbing, as long as they don't have to do it twice.

And that is a good point to keep in mind: Funimation, if they wanted to, could edit the shows to whatever level necessary to get them on air. It's not like they need to recollect people to redub stuff (unlike WS.)

Kiddy Grade Spoiler: (highlight to read)
Isn't Lumiere really old, like Washu, but just appears to be a kid? Change some line to grape juice if she's not visibly drunk. I haven't gotten a pure adult vibe from what I've seen, other than the short skirts and junk.

And with regards to GXP... I would think this isn't "mature" enough for AS... but that seems to rarely have an effect nowadays.

Do you expect to change the S&P. They seem to be set in stone. Plus, family TV is out.

The S&P isn't set in stone. It practically changes every month. We can now say "shit" on Adult Swim but "god dammit" is still/now censored. They're very hard to predict, or to please.

Tenchi GXP: Toonami - Tenchi was extremely successful on Toonami before and since this isn't adult, Toonami seems like the best fit. Suggestive shots might need editing, but as long as they don't go overboard fanservice is (to me) one of the least controversial edits. It isn't like fan service adds anything to the actual show. The humor might be muted some, but that happened to the previous Tenchi series on Toonami and they were still presented respectfully. While I doubt there is any chance of this happening, it might be good if Funimation let Williams St. handle the editing since they have previous Tenchi experience.

Kiddy Grade: ?? - Need more info.. Other than some fanservice-ish shots, which I have no problem with being edited, I haven't seen much to indicate that there is much adult with it. Wine can easily be changed to something else if the rest of the show is non-Adult material more suited for Toonami.

Detective Conan: SVES? (What did he say!) - This show is an oddball. Huge in Japan, Funi wants it to be huge. The subject matter could cause problems, but it isn't Adult Swim material. There isn't a lot of action either and thus it isn't typical Toonami material. However, Funimation has it, and a lot of it, they will get this on TV. A late SVES slot may be the best thing to start with. On Toonami it would need to find an audience rather quickly. Late on Saturday it could build an audience (if it does) and CN could gauge how people take the tone of the series. If everything works out ok it could then be moved to Toonami, with that many episodes it would only make sense to run a successful series weekdays. I'm all for daring stuff on Toonami, but considering this show is already lacking in the action department, I can't say I'd be unhappy with the showing starting out on SVES. One thing I've been wondering, while the show revolves around murder investigation, do the people start out already murdered each episode? If so, then it might be less of a problem since there aren't people being killed in the episode. Instead they are already dead.

They can also say ass hole.

Family TV is the one thing set in stone. (For now, anyway) With the S&P, it's either a kids show, or an adults show. TV where the whole family could sit down and watch went out with Urkel and TGIF. And I doubt the S&P, let alone the CN, will go out of their way to break this rule.
