Cyborg 009 Mentioned In the TV Guide - Twice

    Like This Thread!
In the latest edition of TV Guide (June 28th to July 4th with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on the cover), Cyborg 009 is mentioned, as the thread title suggests, twice. First, in the "What To Watch This Week" section:

Cyborg 009 (Cartoon Network, 6 P.M./ET) Joining the Toonami block of action animation, this 26-episode series - based on a hit Japanese show - is about an athlete turned superhuman out to stop the evil Black Ghost from world domination.

And again in the "If You Loved..." column:

If You Loved... The Six Million Dollar Man
    Check Out Cyborg 009

Part human, part machine, Steve Austin was engineered to save the world. Cyborg 009 (Cartoon Network, 6 P.M./ET), is on a similar mission as he races to thwart the Black Ghost's plots to rule the world. But who would win in a cyborg scrap? Look at it this way: Austin may have been bionic, but 009 moves fast enought to slow down time, leaving the Six Million Dollar Man in the dust. - KW

Interesting: TV Guide is actually giving this one a chance. Usually, with anime, I've noticed they just put them in the family page without batting a blind eye because they are animated. But to have Cyborg 009 in the "If You Like" section....woah.

Now if only they would take Reign out of the "Children's Choice" section of my Digital Cable listings....

Side note: Blood Reign, Curse of the Yoma is *still* listed under Family/Children on my Satillite Guide. In case you haven't heard of this one, it involves a lot of bloodshed, zombies, and Vampiric women eating flesh.

On the other hand, I'm glad that the TV Guide has given a nod to Cyborg 009. I'm looking forward to seeing it more and more.

You know for some reason I still haven't gotten my TV Guide this week in the mail. The mentions are good though. At least this may incline some more viewers to watch (if they listen to the TV Guide that is).

When I turned to the page with "If you loved..." on it I was shocked to see Cyborg 009. I mistook it for Kikaider at first (AGAIN), but it's definitely nice to see the mention.

    hmmmm...

You know something about that blurb disturbed me...it says Cyborg 009 is "based on a hit Japanese show". Isn't "based on" a strange term to use? It kind of makes me wonder if Cyborg 009 is gonna turn out like Sailor Moon and Card Captors where it's an adaption "based on" a hit anime, as opposed to merely a dub of a Japanese show. Maybe I'm looking into this to much, I guess I'm just a little concerned after I found out Sony's doing the dubbing. I mean, we really don't know anything about Sony in terms of dubbing anime, do we?

Anyway, yes, I too was surprised to find this show mentioned twice in TV Guide. Maybe someday we'll get a whole article on an anime. Oh wait, we did already, only it was Pokemon. Where was I going with this? Oh yes, the fact that Cyborg 009 was mentioned twice in TV Guide is an example of anime's growing popularity blah blah blah...

They hire other companies to the dubbing. They tend to do a good job on it too (ex., CB: KOHD, Metropolis).

Geez, it's mentioned in TV Guide. And it's not like they're giving Cyborg 009 bad publicity or anything....

Didn't Infolink (or ToonZone, maybe) give a link to an article in TV Guide about the culture of anime?

What we need is an entire section dedicated to Toonami (and maybe Adult Swim) in TV Guide, but that's wishful thinking. I'm sure a lot of older folk would be highly interested in YuYu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin.

    No old people watch Toonami

    Or refuse to admit it.

Personally, I think that having Cyborg 009 in there as it is, is a good move on TV Guide's behalf. Before, they would bat Toonami and anime with a blind eye, giving them either one or two sentences in their "Family Finds" section (see Yu Yu Hakusho) or writing articles about phenominons just because they have to. (like with the 4Kids shows Pokemon and "that card game show") Maybe one or two more people will watch it when it premieres... (I'm not saying lifting any stigmatas on the block, but perhaps get it a little more wide appeal)

Well, TV Guide did devote a section to anime in the June issue of its monthly cable guide. For my review on it, here's the link: http://forums.toonzone.net/showthrea...703#post839703

Actually, my mother does watch Toonami. No, I'm not joking. She grew up watching those weekly serials on tv, and enjoys watching the block with my nephew. She has a fondness for monster movies, which is why she takes note of YYH's demons.

She also plays video games more than I do. Weird, ain't it .

Very different from my mom. My mom falls asleep from playing video games and hates action & violence, so she doesn't watch Toonami.
