Should Hero and Relena have at least kissed or something in Gundam W???

I really liked this series but that was one of the things that kind of bugged me, I mean all this time of building up their relationship, with the two of them sighing each others names and...then they just end without anything really happening. Not even them like making out, and I mean they set it up so perfectly, in that scene where Hero is about to send her off the Libra, and back to the others. Oh well.

According to what I heard, the creators wanted to but there was no way to fit it in, what with everything else going on in the show. If you look at it, Gundam Wing is a the Universial Century ( From Mobile Suit Gundam to Char's Counterattack) compacted into one series.

That being said, I've always held to the belief that if a creator doesn't use a characters romantic and/or sexual preference to either develop the character or advance the plot (or just come out and say what it is) it's just not that important. But at times it can be fun to speculate.

Also from my understand the people behind G Wing never intended for Heero and Relena's relationship to be romantic but instead to represent the ever changing relationship between the colonies and earth.

Ironically, the show most obviously targeted at girls (Gundam Wing's pretty boys) have less focus on romance and actual character relationships than the more boy-oriented shows (Mobile Suit Gundam, 08th MS Team, Zeta Gundam...)

DYK that much of Mobile Suit Gundam's original 1979-1980 fanbase was largely made up of girls? It got less popular with girls as the franchise moved more towards the model-kit fanbase...until Gundam Wing, which was mostly popular with girls because of its aesthetics more than anything else.

As to Mr. O's observations...I agree, Relena and Heero's "relationship" was more symbolic of the themes than anything else. It wasn't like a true character relationship when you think about it.

Oh come on of coarse it was a romantic one, people don't go all out of the way and into battle for one another, for symbolic reasons. The way those two act around one another, differs completly from the way the other charecters react with one anonther.

No, I meant that the creators got too caught up in making the relationship seem "symbolic" rather than realistic. They are just thrown together in a so-called romance so as to make the themes seem "deep."

Actually I've never heard the analogy of Herro and Relenna representing the colony's and Earth.

According to this old Animerica mag I have: Masashi Ikeda. He hasn't worked on many series, so I can't give you a quick resume.

Here's a bite of what he said:

--"The girl Relena represented what was still good about Earth, and I wanted her to (relate) to the main characters that way...So rather than talk about her relationship to Heero, I think of her more as a representation of the good that's left on Earth."

Hehe, well put. We are talking about the 8th right? I have never seen it but have heard a lot about it. I would have to agree whith IR maybe they should have kissed or something, I meen to go to the lenths they went to something is going on.

No, 8th MS Team had a very satisfying romance (as far as Gundam romances are concerned). We're talking about Gundam Wing.

I remember reading in some staff interview that Gundam W was left open, so that if you read Heero and Duo's relationship any which way you wanted. I did read an interesting 1x2xR once, tho' ....

Anyway, I haven't seen much of Gundam outside of EW but my take on that was that Heero identified Relena with this innocent little girl he'd accidentally killed, an obvious connection but not one I see as romantic... Most ff writers really seem out to trash Relena, though. I don't find her particularly cute, myself, but I don't really think she's all that bad. Doesn't mean that I wouldn't cast her and Zechs as Magenta and RiffRaff in a Gundam version of Rockey Horror, but other than that.... She's cool but just not right for Heero in my book.

I know, it sucks... Here you have lotsa shouen ai, grown women... Hilde, Noin and Une aren't all that bad tho'. Same for Zechs in pigtails and a pink smock dress.
