Is there an uncut japanese version on these discs? If not, then Funimation can go to....well let's just say, I'll stick with recording the show off of International Channel.
... The first two volumes of DBGT officially hit stores today. (Why hasn't anyone made a thread about this yet?)
So, if you've got them, post your thoughts. I will be posting a very thorough review of my own soon after I watch the whole DVD, but I'll say this much as for how FUNi is "setting up" the series : Holy bejeesus!
FUNimation is giving new meaning to the phrase "taking creative license" because it's obvious that they spent a lot of time trying to find a way to skip the whole first saga and not confuse anyone - but they executed it very, very poorly. I give them credit for trying, but after watching the "introduction" episode, I can't help feeling totally confused, because it seems like a completely different show from the Japanese version (which I haven't seen much of anyways, mind you). Well, here's hoping that they'll plan a way to do this better on Cartoon Network, because I am thoroughly dissapointed (and yes, confused).
Mark Menza (who did the music in DBZ movies 6 and 7) is doing the music for the series. Well, it was guaranteed that they wouldn't be using the Japanese music, but it's nice to have a change of pace from Faulconer.
That awful rap song - it is used for intro and credits but (thankfully) in the credits it is just an instrumental with no lyrics (and it sounds MUCH better without words, by the way... I could even get around to liking it) so rejoice, guys! You hopefully won't have to listen to those awful lyrics when it comes to CN.
Er... I guess I'll post a full review of the entire DVD later.

Yes, it does have the Japanese version.Originally Posted by Supernovametalstar

Well, that extra episode was there for FUNi have a recap episode which talks about how Goku became a kid again. The Japanese episode is different from it.Originally Posted by sonario

I thought it was the first episode as a bonus just because they skipped the first 16 or so. I never got past the credits, probably because I kept on trying to get it to Japanese. I guess listening to "TAKE IT TO DA GRAND TOUR!!!" once isn't that bad..![]()
So fans who despise the dub, yet have no wish to break copyright laws, are screwed? FUNi sucks.
What are you talking about? If your refering to the first 15 episodes, those will be released later. If your refering to having the original version, then I don't see how that's a problem considering that the DVDs include it.
Correct.Originally Posted by SNS
SSJ 64 : Yeah. that "recap" episode was created by FUNimation, mixing footage from the first 16 episodes, so you won't get that if you watch it in Japanese. It'll just start from the Japanese episode 17.
God... why does FUNimation feel the need to confuse the hell out of us? This is really getting on my nerves.
But what if someone despises the dub? How are they gonna have a clue of what the hell is going on? The recap episode is dub-only. I know that I will not be able to stand more than 25 seconds of the dub. If I didn't know what happened in these episodes, I would be screwed. FUNi is basically saying "Please bootleg these episodes, because we're not gonna let you see them anytime soon."Originally Posted by SNS
Anyone who can't stand a dub... likes to be a pain.
The ONLY dub I ever had a problem with was Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. And, if you've seen, you'd understand.
I've also seen possibly every animé Toonami's aired, yet I don't choose to watch subs.

No, I don't understand. What's so bad about it?Originally Posted by KnuxFive

Probably should rephrase my statement.
I prefer dubs to subs, because... well... I don't see the point of listening to something you can't understand. Someone may well be the greatest voice actor on the planet, but if you can't understand them... it seems pointless.
If there is no dub, though, I will watch a sub. Perfect example is Sonic X.
Sonic the Movie... they just gave Tails a horribly stuffed up voice. It had been a while since I watched it, so I might give it a try again.
I also don't see the point of being horribly against a FUNimation Recap episode. This gives people who have no idea what happened a starter course until the first saga is actually released. It shows that FUNimation isn't completely heartless; they'll explain what happened, and will go in depth (by releasing the first 16 episode Saga) later.

Ever since I heard "TAKE IT TO THA GRAND TOUR", I have come to understand sub-purists. They seem to have the idea that every dub is like this. While that's not true, it's bastard companies like FUNi who give the anime industry this reputation.Originally Posted by KnuxFive

I bought an vhs copy of Affliction on Sunday, this is my opion I understand basically the entire storyline to now. I thought the dub is pretty good, Pan was cool in my opion during her rescue mission. Goku was pretty good in this tape too. General Rildo is pretty intersing villan I can't wait until get Incubation in a couple weeks.
I'm staying as far away as I can from these Funi dubs and I'll be a good little monkey and wait 10 years or so for something better to come up. Either that or just watch the CD will all the episodes I have.![]()
prefer the "benefit of the doubt" method, listen to an episode in english and if one of the voice actors happen to particularly grate on me (most often voice actresses who do little kids in that "nails on a chalkboard" high pitched voice(for instance the little girl in Argentosoma or the ship's captain from Angel Links, I forget her name but she's the one with the cat thing that lives in her boobs and turns into a really wicked-ass sword) I flip on the subtitles and Japanese audio
