Bandai announces release of Big O merchandise

    Like This Thread!
I recently read an article saying about how Bandai is going to be releasing Big O merchandise early 2003 (and it sounds awesome, I might add). The significance of this for Cartoon Network is that Bandai has a history of releasing their toys/merchandise around the same time of their show's premiere (see my recent Gundam thread).

Hence, I think it's logical to assume that we'll be seeing the new Big O episodes premiering on Cartoon Network (likely Adult Swim, although I'm hoping for a last minute change with it going to Toonami) early 2003. Well, before the summer, anyway.

The article on the Big O merchandise can be read here:

Sure, why not. Who WOULDN'T want a show aimed at adults to be dumbed down for pre-teens for absolutely no reason whatsoever?

Ummm, because Toonami was where it became big (no pun intended) first. It has cooler intros, music, and promos. Isn't that the reason we want every show to be on Toonami!??

Plus, c'mon, is the boradcast version THAT big of a difference from the episodes on the DVD? I didn't think so.

What, exactly, do you mean by "I didn't think so"? There IS "that big of a difference". Cast in the Name of God, Ye not Guilty obviously has something to do with the events of 40 years ago, and if they have that changed, it could change the entire plot of the series.

It's the same guys. They use the same music. There is only ONE difference between Adult Swim and Toonami aside from the fact that Adult Swim has less editing standards, and that's that Adult Swim doesn't have TOM sitting in his chair. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have Big O less edited than have it more edited with a few shots of a robot sitting in a chair.

I don't think Big O should be on Toonami because it would be "cooler".

Unnecessary editting isn't "cool." TOM isn't cool either. He never was. TOM1 looked like a dork with a beer belly, and TOM2 hasn't said anything that would impress me, though he sure has said a lot of worthless claims. Like "Who brought ya Gundam?", as if that substantiates Toonami's lack of material.

    I am so confused.
    --------

On the note of Big O, I would like it to come to Adult Swim, but I did enjoy the Toonami Intros and promos. If it could, I would like it on both...even though it WOULD be dumbed down on Toonami

It's true that Toonami was the place that The Big O premiered on US television, but that's only because at the time there was no such thing as Adult Swim. If there had been, I'm firmly convinced that it would have gone there.
Don't get me wrong, I like Moltar and the TOMs, I like the neat little Toonami bumpers, they're very cute and cool.
But do I like them as much as I like Adult Swim's more lenient editing standards? No. Not even close.

Plus, c'mon, is the boradcast version THAT big of a difference from the episodes on the DVD? I didn't think so.
As Toonami shows go, the editing wasn't as bad as some others I've seen. But that doesn't change the fact that ANY editing is, at BEST, a necessary evil.
Less censorship = better. Simple as that.

I disagree: strongly, heavily, insanly and wholeheartedly with all you said up there.

Except for the editting, but even with, Big O was a knock out of the park success and I'd say it was due in no small part to Toonami's skill of presentation.

Had they gone the Adult Swim format of just showing their shows I doubt we'd have gotten anymore episodes at all.

Kinda like how DBZ would've passed in to the night without Toonami treatment and how Yu Yu Hakasho could've prolly had more staying power with Toonami treatment.

Call it evil if you will, but it grabs peoples eyes..... peaks curiosity and makes the old things worth coming back to.

Presentation's a good thing. Hope Adult Swim picks it up in the coming year, cuz their "music" and warbling sounds come off a bit cheap to me.

    Love their promos tho.

In a perfect world we'd get custome openings and the original.

    ...

"Part Bond. Part Batman. Part giant city-smashing robot."

Seriously, could WS describe the series any better than that?

Plus, I always found the "Big O! Big O Big O!" part of the music... just great in it's cheeziness. Kinda like GI Joe's final byte at the end of their intro...

Stuff like that makes me love the Toonami intros. I'll never forget the Superman beat as we zoom in on the S, thereby zooming in on the dreaded pipes... Strangely, it's never worked as well with the Rising Sun title card... oh well.

Adult Swim should NOT be like Toonami. Adults don't care about a cool robot pressing a button to show vague clips that in no way represent a TV show, to the beat of god-awful music by the world's worst electronic musician outside of Falcouner.

It's an entirely different attitude. Adults (and adult otaku) just want their show, and they want it uncut and presented in its original form. Since we can't have subs, the OPs and EDs certainly suffice.

Get rid of the original OPs, and Adult Swim is just another generic Toonami ripoff, only with less editting. Which is a bad thing. A bad bad thing.

As far as custom and original OPs airing together.. they shouldn't. It just doesn't make sense. I'm not sure why they bother to show an OP before He-Man or Armada.. it makes no sense to me.

Like I said months ago, some of you will see the real opening and ending credits of The Big O and wish they left the Toonami intro and ending in there.

Edited or not, I will still be watching.

[indent]The Toonami ending was much different from the real ending, but I didn't think either were bad. The real ending is very simple, but the song is nice. The opening is just nuts. It is almost like they forgot to budget for an opening and just kind of through something together. It's crazy fun, kind of.

Just so you know, I am not saying that the ending and opening are good or bad. I am just saying that a lot of people are going to hate them.

Funny you should mention that, because it might very well be the case. In the current full run of all twenty-six episodes in Japan, the original opening is completely gone, replaced by a brand new one. I have no idea what it's like yet, but it's certainly possible that it fits the show a lot better than the old one. (Not that I think the old one was bad either, mind you, but it didn't exactly seem to fit with the series' tone...or where it seemed to be headed, story-wise.)

And if all twenty-six episodes are run here on AS, it seems likely that they'll be using the new OP for all of them. Especially if it's shorter than the old one.

Of course CN would show it, if CN paid for it. Which is the case.

I mean over the original thirteen episodes, in addition to the new thirteen.

And please ignore everything I said above. The new theme sounds just as goofy. You can listen to a sample of it here. (RealPlayer required)

EDIT: Also, breaking news, the opening for ep 14, as well as three clips from the episode, can be found here. Beware of spoilers.

EDIT^2: Note that there isn't an OP for 14, the "opening" from the site is actually the beginning of the episode.
