Dragonball GT - is it really that bad?

    Like This Thread!
This past year, I really got into DBZ because of the Androids/Cell Saga (except when it's repeated 3 times). Anyways, I know about Dagonball GT and from the majority of the sites that I've read, the reviewers didn't like it. I was actually looking forward to Dragonball GT after reading the premise, etc. I know Toriyama wasn't involved with the GT, but I was still interested in seeing whether or not it was good. For those who have seen it, is DBGT really that bad as some people claim it to be? Thanks all!

GT has problems. Mainly, Goku wins every battle. Every other character was made weaker, even Gohan who is much stronger then his father. Also, the Saga's are kinda rushed. The 1st saga leads directly into the 2nd saga. The 3rd saga leads directly into the 4th saga. I think it'll see some major editing, a couple of early episodes revolve around a male alien who turns Son Pan into a doll and spends most of his time playing dress up with her.

Thanks Blight Man! A male alien playing dress up with Son Pan...intriguing. Again, thanks!

I can see this one being picked up by KWB! tho'. DB's becoming a franchise and GT's a deliberate attempt to fuse the earlier series while trying to get more girls watching. The theme song (all I've seen right now- ask again after the weekend) is something that sounds more suited for a magical girl show with romantic overtones.

Definitely plan to get up to the one with crossdressing, at any rate.

It is a very mellow opening, that's true. Not fast like Cha La Head Cha La or We Gotta Power.
Ah, the famous Trunks crossdressing ep. I'd like to see this one too.

And no references to breasts either

Vegeta must be so proud! And I wonder what Goten thought when Trunks stopped by in that get-up.

    I better stop with this, shouldn't I?

I don't think GT will go to kidsWB outside of a limited promotional run, CN has it's Dragonball franchise to milk.

And while I haven't seen GT either, the reviews I've seen for the series were mixed. The ones that were a little more favorable towards the series pointed out that if you can get past the first 23 or so ep's the series does get better.

the reason why gt did so horribly in japan was that first of all, akira toriyama was not invovled in it's production, so it lacked the proper "guidance" that z had.

the series began with gokou, trunks, and pan (gohan's daughter) in space, looking for the black star dragon balls. the first few episodes were promising, but as the journeys in space got longer and longer, it all just turned into one bad episode of "Star trek."

eventually, the people behind gt smartened up and had the three return to earth in order to get the series back to it's original "fighting" and "battling" genre. however, it was a little too late, because by then, ratings had dropped horribly, and after only a few years, it was brought to an abrupt stop (the last episode ended very brusquely and left the viewer wondering what the hell just happened.)

however, i'll give gt some credit, because it did have a few good storylines. the whole "super baby" storyline was ok, but the whole ss4 storyline was stale, and it was obvious that the production crew was begging for ratings by simply having gokou reach another level of ss.

all in all, gt is worth watching simply if you're a hardcore db fan and want to see how the characters have changed since z.

I watched about 3/4th's of DBGT about two years back, I think. I remember some cool stuff in there. Though I was watching it on tape and road the fast-forward button through the slow parts. As I recall, the animation quality was some of the best in any of the DG series. The fight choreography was good too; Once the show became more combat intensive a few ep's in. I remember the battles being wrapped up quicker too.

IMO once you get about twenty-thirty episodes in it's at least on par with the best DBZ stuff, maybe better.

    POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD

The episodes with the alien body-snatcher, where he fights Goten then uses Goten to fight Gohan, Gohan and Goten to fight Vegeta, etc was cool. I didn't see many ep's after that though.

    P.S.

My coment on the animation in GT being as good or better than that on DBZ is based on the episodes of DBZ shown so far. I haven't seen the others.

As long as you skip the first 23 episodes, you'll be alright.

Ok, checked out the first 4 episodes...

Part of me felt like I was watching 'Droids' for some reason... I thought the beginning was promising, a bit expositional in places but some nice character scenes. I think the world threat bit was the worst part. It's just too forced. Ok, so I don't think Goku'd rush to fix the situation without some pressing concern but couldn't that have been thought out more?

It's cool someone brought that up because I was wondering about the somewhat bad vibes I've gotten about DBGT. Thanks go to those above for filling ME in as well. One question remains though:

If that's GT, then what do I call the bunch of new episodes coming to CN in September? You know, where I see Gohan as a teenager, hiding his powers, and Goku in the spirit world fighting a (very ugly) green guy?

That is Z's final saga, the Buu Saga. The 2 things you mentioned are from 2 mini-sagas which procede it: The Great Saiyaman, where Gohan becomes a superhero, and the afterlife tournament, where Goku fights other dead champions. Cell, Frieza, King Kold and the Ginyu make a a cameo

the "tournament for the dead warriors" plotline isn't actually an episode in z; it's part of the "janemba" movie in which gokou and vegeta fuse to form gogeta for the first time.

if cn plans on showing that movie, they won't be able to air it until they show the rest of the z episodes because that movie incorporates a lot of elements that have yet to be introduced to the viewing audience (e.g. gokou turning ss3.)

True, but like all the movies (except 8 and 9) don't ever really take place in the DBZ timeline. Mostly because they don't fit in anywhere.

Just for you people who don't know, movies 8 and 9 take place during the 7 years of peace after the Cell games.

GT starts 7 years after the end of Z. I think there's at least one more timejump between where the dub is now and the end.
