    I've Got a Bone To Pick 1

Everyone knows about Funimation's track records with DBZ screwups, well here's one that I call an unforgivable act and i'll explain later

Toward the end of 2000 I heard about a DBZ Mod for Quake 3 called Bid For Power which looked very cool, Planet Namek even did a feature on it in early 2001. At the same time it was announced that Funi and Infogrames were teaming up to put out DBZ games, in the Summer of last year word got to Funi and they sent them two cease and decist order.and they droped the Z format and it released as an anime fighter the months later.

This really pissed me off because I was set to buy Quake 3 that summer for the sake of getting this mod plus I felt bad for the staff who worked on this. And ths is the unforgivable act, how would you feel if you devoted nearly three years of your life to a project of this caliber only to be shut down by greedy people like Funimation. Why do I say greedy?

Because it was rumored that the mod would hurt sales of Funimation's games which so far are pieces of crap!!!!
I'm not that trusting. I kept my finger on the trigger the whole time

I heard that it was actually TOEI that didn't want them to release the mod, not FUNi. FUNi, according to the main BFP page, was set to let them release, but when they were going to, FUNi sent a cease and desist order saying TOEI was against it. FUNi wasn't exactly the most honest company at the time, and I don't know if it was them or not, but BFP still got shut down.

I heard there was a patch floating around that turned it into the original BFP, but I don't know, I don't even have Quake 3.

_____While I feel for the Bid for Power guys (the game looked amazing!), they knew the entire time that they were infringing on Funimation's copyright. What I wonder is how they went about shutting them down. What they should have done is tried to bring the BfP folk on staff for an official release and make that an official DBZ game. If they didn't I'm definitely angry also. Hopefully the company has changed since.

Edit: Ah, I didn't know about the TOEI factor. Does anyone have any more info to build on this?

They actually tried to get them to make a flash game for the DBZ website, but it would be too tough and they'd need to completely remake it, and they refused. I don't know if they actually tried to make an official game or not.

FUNimation allowed them to work on the project until the very end. That's what bugged me. They were permitted by FUNi to work on the game, but when it came time to release it, they were forced to shut down. That's the real bad part. If they were shut down from the beginning, it wouldn't suck as much, but they waited until it was actually complete to do that.

Yea...Bid For Power was a sweet looking game. By far, it's the best DBZ American game of all time, beating the inexcusable excuse for crappy looking games of Infogames (Example? The Legend of Goku. Hell, the Collectable Card game was even better than TLOG). I honestly thought that a big game company could beat the fan made game, but NO, I was dead wrong! If only Funi would hire the Bid For Power's staff instead of Infogames, then I think Funi would stand a better chance of merchandising. Sadly, I don't think the BfP's staff would want to be hired.

    BFP

Bid For Power was and still is a cool game. Because the whole thing basically got shut down in terms of being a Dragonball game, certain key elements of BFP were restructured to allow it to not infringe on copyright. More or less, the characters were just rebuilt and given new names. However, there are still certain parts that are obviously DBZified. One of the playable characters has longer purple hair, only difference is he has two swords and his outfit is different from that of Mirai Trunks in DB.

The game is really quite awesome. You can still actually play the levels that were designed when it was still a DB mod (including Kame's tower, that's a cool level). Graphics are of course quite smooth and take full advantage of the Q3 engine. Energy attacks are present and you can power up and flight is present as well. Just let your eyes go out of focus and you'll think you're playing BFP in its true form, its that close.

As far as FUNimation is concerned, it's possible they couldn't actually just develope a game like that and throw it out there. It would all depend on the exact details and wording of the contract which gives them lisense to the "Dragonball" name here in America. If somebody ever got ahold of a copy of this, it would undoubtly be huge news, but companies like FUNimation like to keep these things under wraps from the public. Maybe in 50 years, though I have heard of licensing agreements never being fully disclosed even longer than that.
