    Slayers?

    Like This Thread!
I am sorry if this topic has been stated, but i didnt feel like wadding through millions of threads.....anyways.....

I have never seen but a few clips of this anime. From what i have seen it looks really good, and i know that it is on the long side as well, and i hear people say that this is one really good anime. If that is true than, it could be a good replacement when DBZ is gone.

What do you think? Do you think this anime has what it takes to be the next "big thing" on toonami?

Not really. I think I saw the "movie" once on iNDemand.

But anything's better than Sailor Moon returning in a month.

It fell into Saban's hands, then went AWOL when Saban realized it wasn't for three year olds. But they won't let it go.

    re: Disney

I'm pretty sure someone from fox programming said that Disney still lets fox do it's own decisions in the buy-out.

    Two movies?

ahem...just some backround info on this series.

    1) it is 3 series long, encompasing 3 seasons of material and is 78 episodes long. all of them have been released here. CPM owns them all.

    2) this show has had 4 movies made. the only character from the series in the movies from the show is the main one Lina along with a reoccuring character Naga. one of the movies has been released here. ADV has the rights to these.

    3) this show has also had a total of 4 OAVs released with a 5th in the works. 3 of the OAVs have been released here. ADV also owns the rights to these.

all right now that the technicals have been worked out time to continue.

do i think this series would be a good replacement for DBZ? no. why? because i dont think that the DBZ fanatics would appreciate this show. some of them might find it cool and the humor in it is somewhat remenicent of DBZ but overall the show estentially revolves around a short in stature and small on the curves firey red head sorcerress and her quest for money and power. it has the adventuring aspect of a fantasy story with all the fixings. magic, monsters, demons and dragons along with mystical items and all sorts of really interesting developments.

problems with the show getting on the air...well for one a majority of the jokes are aimed at the size of Lina's breasts. also this show can get dark real fast. the second half of Next, the second series, is incredibly dark and Try is pretty dark through out, though Gillis is a great character for comic relief. could this show make the cut on CN...maybe...it would be better suited for AS or ASA then Toonami because of that slight mature humor and the darker nature of certain portions of the show.

    again just my two cents.

    thank you for this space.
Aren't you tired of all of this? I know I am.

Ah well, another Slayers thread can't hurt, and most are probably too old to bother reviving by now. If it weren't for FOX nabbing the TV rights to only then do nothing with the series, I think Slayers would have been a welcome addition. Dunno how the DBZ fans would feel about having their show replaced with it, but I know I'd be happy! Not only is it a fun series, but there really isn't *that* much to be edited. No major fanservice to trim down, no real nudity other than a couple shots of people's backs, and very little blood (Save for the last few eps of each season. Even then, it shouldn't be too hard to remove.) Some redubbing will, of course, be required... but none of the language is really vital to the show, anyway. Plus, it certainly beats "Hamtaro" in the action department... heh.

Though it should be noted that the movies and OVA's are in a different vein than the TV series. They take place before the events in the show, and as Zero Angel noted, the only character shared between both is Lina.

True, but is there really *any* replacement that would please the DBZ fanatics in general? Didn't think so. That having been said, I still think Slayers would have been a worthy Toonami addition.

I'll admit that there *are* quite a few jokes about Lina's lack of... assets, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they compose the majority of the jokes. Maybe I should try counting them all over the weekend... Besides, changing the word "breast" to "chest" would probably be enough to slip that content past any who'd complain. If not... dangit, it's still worth a try!

I wouldn't say the show is ever *that* dark, either... but I guess it's subjective. At least even in the more serious moments they can't resist throwing in a few gags. (Can't speak for Try, not having seen it.) Slayers could probably get away with more on Adult Swim, but it's really not the same sort of "mature" as other shows on the ASA block... ok, so maybe it's better suited than Pilot Candidate, but that's an odd one out to begin with. ;-)

Slayers Next and Try are too dark for airing. Next because of the last seven or so episodes, and Try for the entire second half. I'll explain more on that later, but right now, I gotta catch a bus.

Edit: okay, I'm back, and here's some actually detailed answers on why the last half of Next is too dark (and why some of the humor is too risque). I'll do Try later.

    1)
    Spoiler:
Gaav beats the hell out of Xelloss, stomps on his back and head and blasts him through the chest. Although Xelloss is a Mazoku, and therefore doesn't bleed, it's still really graphic with the black energy leaking out of his body and the screams of pain.

    2)
    Spoiler:
Mirugazia's explanation of why the Ryuzoku (Dragon Race) is so terrified of Xelloss. The slaughter scene from the Kouma Sensou, while not being graphic, very clearly gets the point across that Xelloss is quite the little genocideist.

    3)
    Spoiler:
The second time Gaav lets Xelloss have it (a couple of episodes later), he nails him with an attack that literally rips out his right arm and about half his torso. Again, Xell is a Mazoku, so this doesn't kill him, but ut's REALLY obvious that there's a huge gaping hole in his body.

    4)
    Spoiler:
Gaav blasts Amelia into the side of the cliff. When she sinks to the ground, there's a HUGE bloodspot where she hit, and she's still bleeding when she falls. She's dangerously close to death, but she gets healed by Mirugazia.

    5)
    Spoiler:
Zelgadis takes a blow for Amelia, then protects her with his own body when they crash. Amelia goes into shock when she sees his blood on her hands and starts sobbing into his chest while he's lying there bleeding.

    6)
    Spoiler:
Lina uses the Raguna Blade spell to take on Gaav, even though she's not really strong enough. As the blade cuts into his neck, Gaav grabs her by the arms to try and make her release the spell, and a very audible SNAP is heard along with Lina's scream of pain when he breaks her arm at the elbow.

    7)
    Spoiler:
Gaav's death at the hands of the Hell Child (or Hellmaster, he's called both), Phibrizo. This looks excrutatingly painful as well, with a huge hole ripping through Gaav's chest and leaking black energy. Then Phibrizo uses one of his own tricks against him, eliminating the Chaos Dragon's arm. Gaav's last words before Phibrizo snaps his fingers and sets him up in flames are "You little son of a-"

    8)
    Spoiler:
When Phibrizo takes Gourry, Lina tries to chase them down. But she's too exhausted from the Raguna Blade and collapses, coughing up blood.

    9)
    Spoiler:
The "puppets" of Sairaag that attempt to kill the Slaers gang, under Phibrizo's direction. It turns out they're the souls of all who died when Kopii Rezo blew up the city about a year or so before, and are under the control of the keeper of the afterlife, the Hell Child. Lina defends herself with her dagger, only to find out the person attacking her was a little kid. She almost has a nervous breakdown at the fact that she killed a little kid. Syphiel has to bring her out of shock by reassuring her that he was already dead, that she didn't kill him.

    10)
    Spoiler:
Phibrizo is supposedly melted by the combo Dragon Slave that Lina and Sylphiel throw at him.

    11)
    Spoiler:
Phibrizo "kills" off Lina's friends one by one, by stealing their souls. First Amelia, then Sylphiel, Zelgadis, Zangulus, and finally Martina, all the while taunting Lina that she could save them if she'd use the Giga Slave to kill him.

    12)
    Spoiler:
The appearance of the Lord of Nightmares (who shows up by possessing Lina), where we find out that the Hell Child is suicidally psychotic, although we never find out why, and wishes to end the existance of everything, as is the original goal of the Mazoku. To quote- "Destruction...That's the ultimate wish of any Mazoku, isn't it? That's what we were created for, isn't it? ISN'T IT?! Isn't that what we were created for?! That's what YOU created us for!" L-sama (as the Lord of Nightmares is sometimes referred to) pays no attention to his questioning, and destroys him by slowly ripping apart the energy he's made of. Parents who happened to wander in during this scene would find it distubing, since it's basically a demon with the body of a child being tortured to death.

    13)
    Spoiler:
LoN tells the others (who were revived by the Hell Child's death) that Lina no longer exists, her soul has been swallowed up by the Sea of Chaos, of which LoN is made. Gourry refuses to accept this and chases LoN into the Sea of Chaos to force her to give Lina back. Sylphiel, Amelia, and Zelgadis believe them, along with Martina and Zangulus to be dead.

Martina's costume would be subjected to editing, they's probably paint in a few more areas to cover her better.

The entire episode in the villaige of the females would be cut, since it involves a LOT of genderbending (Damn, why can't I look as good in a dress as Xelloss? O.-;;;; )

    And there ya go.

Awwww...c'mon, people, cut me a break. I spent an hour typing that last post with a stuck keyboard, you could at least give me some arguements or feedback or SOMETHING..... ::sigh:: Anyway, I said I'd do Try later, and here they are:

    1)
    Spoiler:
The first thing that comes to mind is the genocide of the Ancient Dragons, courtsey of the Fire Dragon Clan. This incident is pointed out very graphically in various points of the series, especially in Valgaav's flashbacks.

    2)
    Spoiler:
Xelloss' appearance at the Temple of the Fire Dragon King (whoo, long name) and the resulting fight when Almayce also makes his appearance. It gets particularly disgusting when Valgaav finds out the hard way that Ryuzoku blood and Mazoku blood do NOT mix well. Watching his arm pulse like that almost made several people in our anime club hurl.

    3)
    Spoiler:
The fight between Xelloss and Valgaav just before the opening of the Dark Star Gate. WOW, who knew Xelloss could be THAT sadistic?

    5)
    Spoiler:
Erollogos killing Almayce. Green blood everywhere, lovely.

    6)
    Spoiler:
Valgaav's flashback to when Gaav killed him and resurrected him as a Mazoku. Getting run through the stomach with a really big sword is not pleasant.

    7)
    Spoiler:
The anihillation of the clan of the Fire Dragon King, courtesy of Valgaav. We're treated to the sight of thousands of impaled dragons.

    8)
    Spoiler:
Valgaav's "death" when he's swallowed up by the Dark Star/Volphied combination god. Very reminiscient of Phibrizo's death at the hands of the Lord of Nightmares.

    9)
    Spoiler:
Death of Erollogos. Haven't seen this one in months, I just remember it was a little disturbing.

    10)
    Spoiler:
Destruction of Dark Star/Volphied (who were...was? ....using Valgaav as a vessel to speak for them)

    11) (Yeek, forgot one)
    Spoiler:
Jiras' and Grabos' flashbacks to when they were rescued by Valgaav and became his followers. Lovely violent, bloody stuff.

One thing that royally bugged me about the ending of Try...
    Spoiler:
Valgaav/Dark Star/Volphied whatever, were after the exact same goal as the Hell Child, but the gods are merely sent back to their own universe, and Valgaav gets reborn, while Phibrizo was merely destroyed. Mal-chan says it's because he was suicidal, but so was Val! He said so himself! And besides, to return everything to chaos would have killed the gods in the first place, so they could count as suicidal as well...
It doesn't make any sense at all to me.....

Yes, Fox jumped the gun and snatched up the rights to Slayers so that CN couldn't get it first (much like they did with Escaflowne). Anyways, as you know Fox ran it's kid's programming into the ground and now 4Kids is behind the soon-to-be FoxBox. Also, Fox sold the Fox Family Channel to Disney, who renamed it ABC Family, but they still have the rights to a ton of Fox shows (that's why they can air Spider-man and Power Rangers). Last I heard, Slayers was supposed to debut on ABC Family sometime this summer, but I doubt it will happen.

Just think about it: Slayers and The 700 Club, airing on the same network. Slayers. Televangelism. Together. Woo, won't that be a hoot?

(Note to self: create parody entitled "Neon Genesis Televangelon" - Copyright of ME, 2002)
